Laughingjoker, yours is the first piece of feedback regarding Imagine Wimax anywhere on the web to date. I have been checking everyday since their woeful launch. Did it take long for you to get your equipment? Have you called their support department regarding the slow speeds and the terrible pings?

I used to use my Nokia N95 as a modem with O2 and used to get download speeds of 2-3Mb and pings of about 30ms.

So much for their superfast broadband. But then again suppose can't judge everything on one experience, but not a good omen!
    Hey Tony,

It took a week to get it installed, I was told I would be contacted in 24hrs by installation but the never contacted me.

It took 10 mins to install.
Im not allowed to configure the Wi-Fi details myself which im pissed off about!:mad:

I emailed support but they haven't contacted me yet.

My brother-in-law also got it and has crap service despite like 150metres away from base station.

Also I was told when I signed up that I would get "7meg", lies...

Thanks for the info Laughing, like IrishTony said its the first we've got. Looks like a big thumbs down for Wimax then. Can't say I'm shocked.

My brother-in-law lives around 150-200 metres from the base station.

Just rang him and all he is getting is 3-4Mb....

Is he on the same router as you or on a usb dongle.

    Same internal hub as me.

and he has it on a windowsill facing the mast and does not have K Glass or something that could block it ?? IE if he opens the window the speed is the same.

There are 2 types of installation: internal one if you have strong signal (within ~1km from base station) and external - when you have an antenna.

Thanks for posting the info. I'd asked earlier in the thread and was given incorrect info. Their website/pricing now makes more sense, in that context.

I am surprised that the usb dongle was not available at 150m, that is the only truly 'mobile' device one can get.

I could have gotten the USB dongle as so could my brother-in-law.

But we both signed up for the off peak package for €40 a month...

If I only wanted the USB dongle I would get no phone.

    Edit:
I could get the dongle added on to my package for 15 a month/€5 for the first 5 days and €1 for everyday afterwards. Would not exceed €15p/m

I really can't see the point of the dongles when they have such limited coverage at the moment, mobile internet as long as you are within a few kilometers of one of 12 sites in the country!

    Just for an update.

The speeds now are not too bad.
But the speeds are not consistant.

I done a test about 20 ago and got 8Mb. Then did a test around 1 min after and it was 3Mb.
Ping times are still horrific too.

    Speedtest now:

I noticed that the upload speed is particularly poor as well

Yeah the upload speed for my package is 512kb

    So it's quite bad.

Strange the later is gets the slower it gets...
Here speed is gone crap again:

thats not much better than the average mobile midband product using a mobile device

Well those pings and speed variations aren't encouraging. Certainly no faster than 3G midband (the last one, I mean), so I don't know where the "faster, better" claims are coming from.

Hopefully they can improve them (dramatically), but Watty has called this one right so far. Those high pings, wide-variance of pings and dreadful upload speed will make it useless for VoIP, most VPNs and gaming. (i.e. the same as 3G midband).

    Going to be honest here,

Looking at them speedtests people would be better of using Eircoms mobile dongle,

    Rubbish from Imagine,absolute utter fail......

Why dont they show us vidoes of THEIR speedtests in order to promote this garbage?

Answer is, its so bad they cant......

its all midband crap to be honest whether you are with three mobile or imagine WIMAX - and the problem is there is over 300,000 homes in ireland that have no fixed line option at all - so we are stuck with this crap if we can even get it!

Anybody use this product yet and how does it compare to Ripwave ??

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1014/imagine.html

Just got this product and here are the results from the jury

    Speedtest http://www.speedtest.net/result/653103968.png

From imagines own website it works out a little better at 7.4 down and a ping of 88.

But the really scary thing is that I'm getting 94% of packets lost so there is some serious routing problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭IrishTonyO

Second piece of feedback on the entire net!! Speeds aren't bad but my God if you are getting 94% packet loss, it makes no difference what the speed is, you won't be able to do anything

All this is too technical for me. Is it worse or better than Breeze? Can anyone *who's actually using it* tell me?

I stopped using Breeze 6 years ago (yes it was available) so on the face of it it looks faster than Breeze. Certainly better than my 3mb vodafone for VOIP.

Line hasn't dropped yet, kept VPN connections and remote logon live for a number of days.

I imagaine if I/They can sort out the 95+% of data that had to be resent because it go lost in the ether (post) then this would be really good.

If I were you I'd use breeze as it's a much better technology from what I've seen of WiMax so far.

I had Breeze for over a year and hardly had any problems with it apart from connecting to the PSN.

What do you mean by the 95% of data that gets lost? Emails don't arrive? Files can't be downloaded?

At the moment I'm using Breeze for work, and I have to download a good number of big audio files, a few megabytes each, occasionall 20MB or 30MB, so if this isn't adequate with WiMAX I certainly wouldn't want to change.
