Actually ludar i'm not related at all, but i do know the majority of hurlers in Ulster uses them and yes i got mine hand made with a bigger bas, i was even allowed to choose my own plank.

With so many pointless questions why dont u call them!

Now i regret even trying to help u.

No, you're alright. I wouldn't buy a hurl from someone who uses underhanded shilling tactics to drum up a bit of business and then throws a hissy fit when someone calls them out on it.

    Bobsy,

The only Tipp hurley iv ever got was last year from John Ryan in Littleton. Serious timber in it and a sound fella. Havent used an O'Brien but have only ever heard good things about them.

InTheNet your after letting yourself down by not just admitting you have some connection woth POKane.

Okay we always have problems with these types of threads. If you think that somebody is a shill then please report it instead of engaging with the poster. It will get sorted more quickly. For the record I have banned InTheNet as I believe that he has a connection with the company in question.

    Powersurge, check your PM :)

Bobsy (kinda what I sent by PM to Powersurge)

I can really only tell you about a few different hurleymakers in the South Tipp region.

I got one Hurley off Eddie Grant in the last few years.

The hurley I got was okay, I thought a bit heavy, but I'm sure if you specify to him he'll make it whatever way you want. (I got the hurley through a friend as I don't know exactly where Eddie lives, although he's a sound man - hails from the Killenaule club but think he might be living in the Thurles parish)

O Briens can be an excellent hurley. He's by far the most popular hurleymaker in Tipp. One word of warning is ask for a handmade hurley. It'll take a little bit longer to make but it's worth the wait. I'd also recommend getting a copy of a hurley you already have (especially if you have a beaut at home that's a little worse for wear). (PM me if you want directions to his house/ His Number - It's hard to find)

Another Hurleymaker in the South Tipp region, whom I only came across a few months back is Don Lyons (Former Ballingary Senior Hurler). He's just after starting up his own business. I got 2 from him. They were really nice sticks, I'd just wonder that when people start hearing about him more, will the quality deteriorate. Sound chap as well - tough bit of stuff on the pitch though. (PM me if you want directions to his house/ His Number - It's hard to find)

There's another man in Tullaroan Co. Kilkenny (close to Ballingary/Mullinahone) that mended a few of mine through a man at work. He done a great job, and I would def be willing to try him out when buying a few hurleys next year.( I don't have his number but can get it if you want. Send me a PM)

I've only heard good things about John Ryan (Littleton - I think - never used him though)

There's another man (name escapes me) in Mullinahone - 'The Island' I think is the address. He mends hurleys but I'm not sure if he makes them. Pretty expensive for a splice, if I remember correctly.

I've probably said this in an earlier post but at the moment, I'm using Frank Murphy in Kilmeaden (close to Waterford City). The main reason is I'm living in Carrick on Suir, and passing through Kilmeaden 5 days a week. He makes a lovely copy but thats about it. His originals are terrible.

I hope that's of some help Bobsy :)

O'Brien from Drangan in South Tipp makes serious hurls definitely the nicest ive ever used. Torpey from Clare would be fairly well regarded down that kneck of the country, nearly sure i heard fat joe uses Bulfins too...

Would agree about the o'brien hurls. Absolute class. Also tj reids hurls are good as well. Wouldnt anything else but either of them

That's the full number, no digits missing.

I think that o connor hurleys are a good hurley but they break too easily.Anyone agree.........

For 26euro a hurl, one clash and there gone.. Waste of money. I dont think they give the timber enough time to season properly. its too fresh

Lads, how would ya go about getting a hurley made and sent out to ya? Was readin on a thread here before about bein able to do that. Was lookin on www.igahm.com, (all the hurley makers around website), do ya have to ring them up and give order, name address etc or is there an email address? What about payment even?
Would like to try those Dj Daly ones from Pallaskenry, Limerick in particular but I'm not too fussed really I'd try any.
It's just I don't fancy drivin half way up the country for the sake of 1 hurley and wouldn't mind payin the extra few quid to get it sent out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I live in dublin n get my hurls sent ta me from wexford off jordan hurls i tink there brilliant!!! a few of the dublin seniors are startin ta use dem now!!!

For anybody interested, here is a list of hurl makers in Galway. At the moment, there are quite a lot of hurl makers in Galway. I've listed below all the makers that I know of and heard about (some details might be incorrect, see question marks). I haven't included contact details but these can be found by searching the phone book or using any of the numerous online search engines
    • Dunne Hurls, Eyrecourt
    • Tom Joe Larkin, Killimor
    • Philip Larkin, Loughrea
    • McKeigue, Kiltormer ?
    • Tony Ward, New Inn
    • Kevin Molloy, Kilnadeema
    • Paddy O'Dea, Ardrahan
    • Seamus Canning, Mullagh
    • Higgins, Sylane/Corofin?
    • Tony Keady, Oranmore
    • Johnny Kelly, Portumna
    • John Clancy, Beagh/Tubber
    • Heffernan, Rahoon ?
In my opinion of all the makers in Co.Galway, Paddy O'Dea's hurls are the best. They have the classical Galway pattern with a very rounded bos. Quite a few of the county players use O'Dea hurls such as Farragher, O. Canning, Burke, Barry, Lynch, Moore, Collins, Harte and Callinan.

There are good reports doing the rounds about Molloy & Dunne hurls. The Molloy hurls are very similar to Paddy O'Dea's.
Philip Larkin hurls are well finished but they are very like the O'Connor hurl from Cork. TJ Larkin's hurls have good ash but the finish isn't the best. Finally, Seamus Canning's hurls have a good reputation and are used by his brother Joe.

Overall, everybody has their own opinion on who makes the worst/best hurl. You just have to try them all and find one which you like.

By far the best hurl ive ever used has been John Codd,Rathnure,Wexford (not too sure if he still makes them) in sayin that I got one or two poor ones: very light, broke easily. But I got some brilliant hurls of him, nice weight and made just the way you wanted it.I just recently started using Star hurls and im not to impressed by them tbh. After waiting ages for them I expected much better.Maybe I just got a few bad hurls of him i dont know.
Anyone reccomend any hurley makers in Waterford and does anyone know what hurls Dan Shanahan and Eoin Kelly(Waterford) uses? Cheers

Eoin Kelly makes his own hurleys. I'd say Dan might be using them too seeing as they are cousins.

I think School Neccessities out in Tramore have them but haven't a clue who else stocks them or how to get them.

To hard to say. I have been using O'Briens from Tipp for the last while. Alright hurleys, break easily enough though. For 2011 I'll look into a few Galway hurley makers
