Happy holidays!

I was grabbing a coffee at a busy Dublin coffee shop this afternoon and as each customer recieved their coffee the irish girl across the counter said "happy holidays". Are we really using that ridiculous phrase here now?

Well, we have somewhere in the region of 50,000 Muslims in this country. And we have around 2.5 million Athiests/Agnostics (Most of whom don't realise they are) So yeah, it's a fair statement.

You don't have to be a practising Catholic to celebrate Christmas though.

Seriously though, I don't see the harm in them just saying "happy Christmas" - there IS no need to be too PC...

I noticed this first almost a decade ago when corporate christmas cards had 'happy holidays' printed inside, I made sure I included a few a few extra references to christmas in what I wrote on them.

I know of multinational companies where the Christmas party for staff is only referred to as a 'winter party' in all corporate emails and discussions.

I will never stop calling christmas christmas. It's the same holiday with the same traditions that were practised by christians, changing the name won't change this fact.

Christmas is an integral part of modern irish culture. It has little to nothing do with religion for most people (be they believers or not).

Ah no, I mean don't get me wrong, it didn't get me angry or anything. It just sounds as if she was told by the manager to say it and it sounded like a weird, out of place thing for an irish person to be saying. I'm an atheist myself but one has to wonder who in their right mind would be offended at being wished a happy christmas?

Absolutely right, just nonsense. But it's good to see the fake christians in the US (probably some here aswell) get upset over it.

We're always told to say, "Have a good day!" or something to that effect when we're handing customers back change. It always makes me cringe, it just sounds so American!

I have no problem with being friendly. I'll chat away happily to any customer at the till but damn, I'm Irish, I work on Henry St ffs, "Have a good day now!" just does not fit in!!! :rolleyes:

I think "Happy Holidays" sounds ridiculous, tbh. Nice sentiment, but sorta silly.

My friend worked in a shop where they were encouraged for a time to say that. That is until the amount of abuse they got for it behind the counter forced them to stop.

"Have a nice day!"

Typical Irish Answer: "I'll have a nice day if I feckin want to have a nice day!"

Which is also a bit silly if you ask me.

"Happy fake birthday of Christ" is my preferred salutation.

He was actually born in September.

It's kinda like the British Queen who has a real birthday and an 'official' birthday.
