We have all heard of the contravertial French three "strikes and your gone" law against those that abuse copyright law on the Internet.

Well here is a FULL BLOWN version of it and it could be coming to a town or airport near you.

The EU has clubbing together with the US, Canada, Australia and Japan to form a trade pact known as ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement.

Basically they want to stamp out counterfeiting, copyright theft and even sensitive issue of intellectual copyright on the internet.

The US is pushing for a global version of France's so called "three strikes law" a measure by which people who illegally download music or films receive warnings but ultimately face having their internet cut off and going to jail.

The Acta talks are taking place in "extreme secrecy",* ‬making it impossible for elected politicians, media or the public to get access to official documents.

Basically in a nutshell under the ACTA agreement customs officials could nab you for the unauthorised content of your Laptop, Ipod, MP3 Mobile phone.

Another one of these threads eh. Perhaps France has a way around this but if you have three strikes against you is it not possible to access the net via say mobile broadband.

It would be very difficult to enforce at the moment with so many free WIFI spots about.

Password protect your hard drives? AFAIK they'd need a court order to get into it then.

May not be as easy as that as ID and formalities might have to be produced. Just get someone else in the household to registers under their own name.

Just out of curioustiy, how will they tell if the music on my HDD is pirate or not...

A lot of it I ripped in 2005-2006, and it's been shuttled between multiple drives, devices and operating systems so much that even I forget what came from piratebay and didn't

Simple, they can run software through it to search for "signatures" to confirm that they are legit. I believe they have been doing this with Ipods and MP3 players at customs in Canada quite recently.

    How though?

I could easily rip my CDs into mp3 using a freeware tool rather then itunes/window media player.

and what are canadian customs doing again?

Technically you are only allowed one ripped copy of an original CD.

Thread on the Canadian customs checking pirated music.

Without even clicking the link, what are the odds that the OP and post title bare any kind of relevance or semblance of a logical leap to the actual content of the link? Or if the link is to a conspiracy website, reality?

Its basically an update on a previous thread that may have implications on this country. I cannot see much of a conspiracy in it.

    Oh Runnie. Runnie Runnie Runnie...

You realize if legislation was anywhere remotely near the point of ratification it would be all over the blogosphere?

Especially seeing as how these Politicians that are supposedly outside of this circle of extreme secrecy would be required to pass any such legislation into law?

I think you need to chill out and watch some Stargate or something: That will have you thinking all sorts of wild thoughts. Maybe the USAF does operate alien technology under a mountain in Colorado. Hmm.

Congrats OP on yet another crazy thread title.. You're really really good at making anything dramatic.

There's a copy of it on Wikileaks somewhere. It's basically talks where the entertainment industry are saying what they want (more DRM, 3 strikes, blocking websites, border searches) and our elected officials are just asking how how they have to jump.

I'm pretty sure that technically that can be seen as piracy. You've made an unauthorized copy of the media.

I'm in Ireland, I don't own an ipod and I disregard all copyright laws.

    I'm awesome.

I'm always wary of the remote CDDB look ups.
When you play music on your PC, some PC programs which play MP3's and CD's will go to a CDDB server on the internet and look up the artists name, genre of song, song titles and maybe even album cover art.

But then again, it can't tell whether your copy is legit or not, just that you have it.

Completely and utterly useless. If this widely used it would be so simple and quick to create a program that alters a tiny part of the file randomly so no file has a signature of a know pirate copy.

Just so you know in case any of you are going to Saudi Arabia do not have movies/music on your laptop. As for your ipod forget about it.
Customs are scanning all electronic items such as laptops/mp3 players/phones etc...
Anyone found with illegal music/movies etc (they treat it all as illegal regardless) will be fined €120 and deported asap..
I work in a large multinational company and this came in to us last week that if we're traveling only bring a work laptop with absolutely nothing on it and your work phone.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

The EU approved a law which doesn't allow a three strikes and out method.

So I think this is just more paranoia
