Just so you know in case any of you are going to Saudi Arabia do not have movies/music on your laptop. As for your ipod forget about it.
Customs are scanning all electronic items such as laptops/mp3 players/phones etc...
Anyone found with illegal music/movies etc (they treat it all as illegal regardless) will be fined €120 and deported asap..
I work in a large multinational company and this came in to us last week that if we're traveling only bring a work laptop with absolutely nothing on it and your work phone.
You would to treat carrying MP3s like carrying dope across the customs, Get caught with lots you could go down. Scandisk are developing a 120GB Micro SD card due for release in 2011 that could be very easily concealed. :)

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

The EU approved a law which doesn't allow a three strikes and out method.

So I think this is just more paranoia
Its the US that is pushing for the Three strikes law. These are the same bullies that have also got the EU to submit data retention etc. They also got the weight and pressure of the media corporates which is currently on its knees. I cannot see the EU being able to do too much.

I use Truecrypt to encrypt all storage data on my harddrives, laptop or PC. I would like to see them check for any illegal files then.

Whatever. Until I hear about this from a reliable source I remain wholly unconvinced of any such measure.

I can see them treating an encrypted hdd as a locked suitcase and could see them haveing the power to inspect it even from remote access if they had suspicion there was something on it. The best thing one could do would be to keep stuff on an external USB drive and plug it out when on line.

I think its a bit excessive tbh! And theres always ways around these kinda things, some genius will figure something out

I wasnt talking about the data retention I was talking about ACTA.

And I dont see a problem with Data retention, seeing as how a National Prosecutor can deny the FBI access requests if they wish.

I think not. Searching your private file directory would be a serious breach of the 4th Amendment. And not having this facility has not prevented Police from tracking down child porn offenders: They simply use IP logs and Search Warrants. All very over the table.

The idea that Customs would search and prosecute your hard drive for DRM free music is absurd. It would be like finding a laptop in someone's luggage and demanding to see a receipt: its just not done.

It looks like they are trying to bring in the same powers with copyright theft as they do with illegal drugs.

It would be up to you to keep receipts and have everything in order before you travel.

BRING cd case with you ,receipts , or just delete all your mp3s from the laptop.
its like people who are stopped for carrying hash on a plane.
    How stupid are you?
IF you really need it ,i presume you can buy it in canada anyway.
IF i was going to canada ,id just put podcasts on the mp3 player.
i presume they,d prosecute you if you had a large no ,like dozens of drm free files.

well this is a load of bollocks. ricman, how the hel is it like having hash on a plane???

To be honest the only negative thing about this is that companies will be able to decide what films and music will be available to you.

Where as with the internet, completely obscure films that most people have never heard of and have no chance of being release on dvd are still available to those who want them.

There's a rake load of 80's films I love that are never going to get released on dvd as there just isn't enough people pushing for releases.

WHAT i mean is ,you can just delete all mp3s from, the laptop be4 you get on the plane.
AS IN whats the point in sum1 carrying a joint to say new york, on a plane.IF sum1 ,wants hash ,im, sure its possible to buy some in new york city.
WHY risk going thru customs for 5euros, worth of hash, or getting prosecuted.

THERE,s people who have been arrested for 1euros worth of hash, or sent back to ireland.IF you had copied mp3s,it would be better to delete em before you get on the plane.im not talking about sum1 trying to smuggle hash, just sum1 carrying a tiny amount ,like 1 or 2 rollups
some arabian countrys arrest people for having tiny amounts of hash,on their cloths,or shoes.

"No, I mean they held his dick and chopped his whole body off. Thats all he was in the end. A dick."

Its basically an update on a previous thread that may have implications on this country. I cannot see much of a conspiracy in it.

And if theres one type of piracy i hate, its CONS-piracy

Your word against them if you are hauled over by customs. :p

May not be as easy as that as ID and formalities might have to be produced. Just get someone else in the household to registers under their own name.

Yeah, get the kids to register and have them damned for life for illegal downloads and make it cool for them to apply for jobs with their criminal record attached.

So I guess the recent reports are right, that countries were in secret talks to introduce this for years as this thread is 2 years old.
