Stephens Day, only Irish people with an inferiority complex would call it boxing day.

Or Irish people brought up in the north.
Or Irish people brought up in border areas where English television was available before satellite technology.
As a child I preferred the unusual 'Boxing Day' ,always wondering if boxing took place on that day,as opposed to another boring saints day.
Nothing to do with an inferiority complex.

    St Stephen's day
The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
St. Stephen's Day was caught in the furze,
Although he was little his honour was great,
Jump up me lads and give him a treat.
    Chorus:
Up with the kettle and down with the pan,
And give us a penny to bury the wren.
    2. As I was going to Killenaule,
I met a wren upon the wall.
I took me stick and knocked him down,
And brought him in to Carrick Town.
    Chorus:
    3. Droolin, Droolin, where’s your nest?
Tis in the bush that I love best
In the tree the holly tree,
Where all the boys do follow me.
Chorus: 4. We followed the wren three miles or more,
Three mile or more three miles or more.
We followed the wren three miles or more,
At six o’clock in the morning.
    Chorus:
    5. I have a little box under me arm,
Under me arm under me arm.
I have a little box under me arm,
A penny or tuppence would do it no harm.
    Chorus:

Bad people of Tipperary attacking wrens on St Stephen's day :D

Its St. Stephens day. We're not in England, dont let this pollution in here. It's bad enough with every eejit in the country going around in a stupid Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal jersey referring to these teams as 'us' and 'we', F*cking numbheads.

Stephen's Day, or St. Stephen's Day.. Would probably never actually say St. on account of it being longer, and me being lazy

Admittedly, Boxing Day is a cooler name. I used it when I lived in England and the North, but I used Stephen's Day in the RO1. Not for patriotic reasons - just abiding by majority custom.

That might be a personal opinion (which of course you're entitled to) but it's also extremely subjective; personally I can't see how it could be viewed as "cooler".

No, growing up in Longford we always called it that though it was pronounced "wran" day. Is a dying tradition sadly but in certain parts you still get a good few wren boys dressing up and playing music door to door and in pubs. Was always a nice little earner

Recovery from what? The excitement of santa's surprises? Eating all the mince pies? You must be English or something. No sessions here on Christmas day bucko :D
Except for in the local near the church. Mass finishes at 12 but the church car park is still full 3 hours later :)

The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon tradition giving seasonal gifts (in the form of a "Christmas box") to less wealthy people and slaves. In the United Kingdom this was later extended to various workpeople such as labourers, servants, tradespeople and postal workers.

I'm sticking to St. Stephen's Day; less expensive.

Which "summit" ? Mount Everest ? Mount Brandon ?

Note re poll so far - I'm surprised that so many Irish people call it by the UK name.....I heard Matt Cooper's replay this morning, and he had some English guy from Arnott's on, and he had to warn him not to call it "Boxing Day".

it is a border thing, I think it's cos we watch BBC.

I only ever call it boxing day though.....anyway, I'm away to the pub now, I suppose I will have to defend my opinion later :P

I think 95% of the rest of the country have bbc as well, and I grew up with only the 4 uk channels and the 2 irish ones as well but I never call it boxing day. It's more a you thing I think, not that there is anything wrong with that of course.

In fairness, it's about as cool as "High Street", "the mainland" and, yes, the "British Isles".

Agree entirely with this. I also had the four British channels growing up and the name "Boxing Day" for Lá an Dreoilín/ Wren Day/ St Stephen's Day was never on the nomenclature menu.

What's the betting that the people who use this name also use the term "British Isles" and never, ever can talk about retail sales without terming them "High Street" sales?

Called Boxing day back home (mostly because thats what it says on the TV guide) but I prefer St. Stephens day.
Who goes boxing on the 26th with all that turkey the day before?

    Fair enough.

My view of either name is not ideologically informed so my preference is obviously going to be less rigorous and more arbitrary.

    All good.

Like I said, fair enough, although I'm not sure I use any of those phrases, anodyne and unworthy of analysis (to me) as they are.
