Following on from my Corolla KE30 Estate thread..

I was wondering if there are any old Hi-aces left?
I'm thinking of the original model, c.1977 onwards..

Spotted a tidy 'ZG' reg red Hiace today near Liffey Valley SC being driven on trade plates... could be this one..

A good few of these were petrol and weren't worth keeping to a lot of people.
Remember driving one when I was 11. weird gear shifter.

I know of a tyre co in Wexford who still run an 88 Hiace, must be similar mileage on it.

The model I'm wondering about is this type, the earlier model...

it had 360,0000 miles on it & it rattled like hell ,but the engine was as smooth as the day it left the factory !

an english fella that worked with me, it was his work van & everywhere he went ( we serviced the 32 counties daily )
he was stopped by the travellers looking to buy it :D

used to drive him mad !!!!

I had an 88 SWB model from 1999 to 2002, weak point was the cast iron cylinder had cracking and relays for the headlamps that were prone o hopping out when you hit a bump. It had only 70k when I got it but the body was rough enough to attract the attention of the cops so I had to shift it and settled for a Berlingo (Big mistake). I went back to the Hiace a year later with the post 96 Euopean Model.

I have seen the MK 1 1967 to 74 model out in Australia but never over here. They were wierd looking

Not my pic I just lifted it. It doesn't look too bad though. Possibly one of the ex Garda ones. There was a shedload of those around Dublin in the early 90's

My Dad had two old Hiaces until around two/three years ago, the old early 1980's shape and the square 1987 version. Used the 1987 one as a daily runner for years (pristine), replaced engine with the 1989 one he bought from Fast Fit in Santry (white high-roof they had it parked outside for years to store tyres).

When a car parked next to it caught fire and badly damaged the van, he still repaired it (respray, new exterior handles, mirrors and vents). He eventually sold it as he couldn't hack the 'enquiries' of the local traveller community anymore, so it now lives happily in Wexford with the older minibus he had too.

What was their fascination with them I wonder?

Always like seeing old commercials at rallies, the Cinderellas of the vintage scene.

Might be a long shot, but up till 8 or 9 years ago I was exporting a lot of vehicles and parts from Europe to West Africa. Finland was a good place for old Jap stuff, as was Denmark. Try sites like ebay in several countries and see how you get on.

I drove a battered white flat-bed one in Australia in 1995 for a carpenter/cabinet maker guy. We made the toilet doors and stair handrails for the (then new) Technology centre in Sydney. Manual, column shift. there wasn't a bother on it.

what's the difference between the pick ups and a Dyna and did they overlap in production? Uncle had what I think was a dyna in the early 80's but may have been a Hiace.
