Is an Iphone of any use without 3G signal in your area?

Hi,

I am considering buying my wife an O2 (UK) Iphone for XMAS. But in my neck of the wood (Newry) there is no 3G reception available.

So I was wondering if the Iphone is really of any great use if you have no 3G. The package I am buying will include 1 year free Wifi (at hotspots) and Internet on the handset itself.

But will APPS work with no 3G signal, and only conventional GPRS/EDGE reception?

I have the original 2G phone, still have no reason to update. All my apps work good and the ones I use most have push which is very quick and reliable. 3G of course would be quicker for loading data but the amount of data most of these apps load is minimal and most of it is text anyway. If you don't mind waiting 3 or 4 seconds longer for the data to appear then you would be fine.

In short, yes, they will work. Apps do not tend to care what speed of network they are on.

You might care, however, if the app needs a good connection (e.g. radio streaming, etc.). Other apps will just be a lot slower.

Also if you have WiFi it negates the need for 3G at home too, all of the apps can work on your WiFi.

Edge isn't really that much slower anyway. I live in Dublin and even here it switched to Edge a lot of the time.

Typing this on my iPhone and it's been on Edge all morning. Switches between E and 3g constantly here in Donegal also . 3g is great but not a neccessity.
