How Irish are you?

    I am Irish, but I don't think you would necessarily know it. I don't speak Irish, I don't read Irish writers, listen to Irish music, I don't know anything about the country. That's not to say I am ignorant of all such things, I just haven't gravitated towards Irish interpretations of these things.

    I wonder how widespread this phenomenon is. For example, D4s aspire to a more American culture than anything else, I know many intellectuals in college who appear to be more continental European in their outlook and tastes than anything which would be considered Irish.

    Perhaps it is the case that national stereotypes are being eroded by the increasingly cosmopolitan nature of all societies, including Ireland's.

    So how Irish are you?

    Born and raised here. Parents are Irish. Grandparents too.

    I suppose that means 100% Irish.

    I don't: speak Irish, follow Irish politics, have any interest in GAA, have any probalem with England, listen to Irish music or particularly care about our history.

    But I do support the LOI :pac:

    I'd say about 80% . Not overly patriotic but I can speak the language fluently, granted my writings a bit dodgy. ;)

    My family is all Irish as far back as I care to look so in that respect I'm Guaranteed Irish™ but other than that I don't know.

    How would you describe the average Irish person these days?

    As the great Irish poet Phil Lynott used to say, "is the anyone out there with any Irish in them ? Is there any of the girls who'd like a little bit more Irish in them ?"

    Just because you don't subscribe to the unholy trinity of Fianna Fail, the GAA, and the Catholic church, you're still Irish if you were born here or live here.

    Geographically,genealogically we're all Irish.
    I'm sure the OP means culturally and are our viewpoints Irish.

    Actually no.
    Being born in Ireland doesn't mean that you're automatically entitled to Irish citizenship... You also have to have at least one parent who is an Irish citizen :cool:

    I don't follow the GAA or pay too much attention to Irish politics (nor do I pay too much attention to international politics, people who fart on about how they closely follow US politics because "it has sooo much more of an impact on my loife" piss me off, no it doesn't you retard).

    Apart from that I'd say I'm pretty Irish in terms of my sense of humour etc. I'd say Irishness has become fairly diluted in the past ten - fifteen years ago, be that because of increased immigration/globalisation/whatever. It's not a bad thing neccesarily but it's definitely noticeable. I was watching a clip of the den from the mid to late nineties there the other day and realised they really don't make people as Irish as that anymore.

    You are correct of course, never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that so many people would misinterpreted something as obvious as that. Then again, perhaps they are just being intentionally vexatious.

    Born here, raised here, broke, speak the language, watch GAA (sometimes), play the fiddle (badly), support Man United and don't support the Irish team (until we were robbed and could be an angry mob) and sing rebel songs when drunk but can't sing more than 4 lines of the anthem.

    Pretty Irish me thinks!!
