Apparently. Wasn't there myself but my housemate popped in for a while. Said there were a few by the quad.

Quite a few at all the gates this morning at 8.30 . Maybe 20 at Wards gate, about 12 at Arts Millenium and 20 more at Ulster Bank. They were wandering over and back the road at Ulster Bank, blocking traffic coming in. Every few minutes they seemed to allow a few cars in.

Most of my lectures went ahead today, only a few cancellations.

I can't understand why the students union services are shut down??

I don't think that they're legally allowed to do that.

They look like they're working on a technicality! They're not actually stopping in front of traffic, just taking turns crossing the road really really slowly! It all looks very childish to be honest.

I picked a bad day to practice my driving I drove in by the bank and they were crossing back and forth..I thought they said they wouldn't obstruct people going to college?
And my mother on the way out said they just stood in the middle of the road staring at her...so silly.
When I was driving out by the Quad they didn't bother me at all and just let people pass.
And just heard there might be another strike next Thursday.
But there was hardly any traffic, so that was nice!

I was on picket today, we didn't block traffic, we crossed the road while cars were coming up to let people know they're crossing a picket. We let all cars leave the college without doing this, only cars going in.

Any student who entered campus today was not crossing the picket line. This was made clear to students well in advance of today.

Yet, my housemate was (admittedly, temporarily) delayed while trying to drive in this morning. Even though she crossed no picket line.

I'm not saying anyone did anything wrong, but I firmly believe that people have a right to use those roads unhindered if they so choose.

Both my parents are public sector workers. Neither have striked in recent memory but I can remember my father picketing once and he didn't even come close to getting in anyone's way.

    Shame on you.

I know a person that wanted to go the Kingfisher Gym this morning and was accosted and questioned about his intentions. This person, now unemployed, has paid his taxes and had to encounter your ilk.

accosted and questioned about his intentions.

    That definitely shouldn't have happened.

No-one (relevant to this strike, at least) has the right to act in such a manner.

Hmm, unprovable story about unnamed person who had a crime committed against them by more unnamed people? Yeah that definitely happened.

Well how would you suggest people deal with it?

I severely have my doubts that this was a credible picketer. Myself and a few friends were given out to for being aggressive, walking too slow in front of the cars :D

oh and shame on you for down-talking me for expressing one of my basic human rights for what I believe is just

Picket in a visible yet non intrusive manner.

Be by the entrances so people know what's going on. Make your point there.

But when you get in the way, you're just going to annoy people and they'd probably be less sympathetic to your cause due to that.

It doesn't send as big a message but it doesn't piss anyone off either.

most people appreciated the fact we were letting people know they wee crossing a picket line, this a common form of protest, if not the most common

But not everyone you treated like that actually was crossing a picket line. (students were given a guarantee that entering campus wasn't crossing the picket line).

And that still doesn't give you the right to occlude the road. Only the gardaí and University authorities would have that right in this case.

    Who gave this guarantee?

and if people base their politial bias on being stopped for two seconds in a car, I feel very sorry for those people

From the Students' Union Weekly Email Issue 12 (distributed by the NUIG Student Mailer):
Public Sector Strike Action on Tuesday 24th of November

Due to the strike action by University Staff on Tuesday 24th of November all Students' Union services will be closed for the day.

This includes: the Students' Union Office, the SU Shop, the SU Cloakroom, the College Bar, Smokey's and the Wall Café. The SU Session that evening is also cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

University staff who are members of SIPTU, and IFUT will be on strike. However, the University will not be closed and staff who are not members of the participating trade unions will be working as normal. The Students' Union has been assured that students entering the University next Tuesday will not be considered to be crossing the picket line.

Check your own studentmail if you don't believe me.

I'm not denying they said it, but Student Union had no contact with trade unions and did sweet f**k all today. They don't speak for picketers when they weren't they didn't have any affiliation to us

Then where did they get their assurance?

It sounds like you're hinting at an allegation you shouldn't be hinting at...

I didn't get anything in my email about that. Furthermore, I heard a person in the library inquire if it would be open today and they were told they would have to cross a picket. I'd never believe the students union anyways tbh but that's kind of besides the point.

I'm saying that they got no guarantee as far as I know and were not in contact with any unions and if they weren't, they've no right to speak for the picketers

All registered students should have gotten it.:confused::confused:
    I blame CS!

Your second point does look pretty bad for them but would make sense really considering what a picket line stands for.

You're totally correct that if they weren't in contact they've no right to speak. But I have to question if you are in a position to know that no such guarantee was made? I don't know if you're involved in a union (in which case you probably would know) or if you simply support them.

I'm not registered....but I receive a lot of other emails from the uni so I assumed I'd get this one too. Never mind. tbh though I still wouldn't listen to the su on anything of any importance! Would love to know who their source was for this guarantee though.

I would actually like to know that too.

It'd be seriously bad form to just make something like that up. But not impossible either. Especially considering the lack of a source.

I am not involved in the union. I'm a student. I know that no one there today had said anything as regards a guarantee from the student union, these people are involved in trade unions (mostly SIPTU), students were treated no different as others crossing the picket line. If any guarantee was made, I find it hard to believe that not one person would mention this on the picket today.

    This and
they were told they would have to cross a picket.

make me doubt that guarantee now.

I think I'll be emailing the SU now (out of curiosity if nothing more).

I was on the picket lines at NUIG today. We stopped cars for 3 seconds at most and that was only because we were crossing the road backwards and forwards. As for the SU, the **** did **** all, no support at all. As a student of 6 years and counting in NUIG, I was proud to join those on the picket lines. Those students who did cross are ungrateful scabs, who couldn't, just for one day, study (or pretend to study) at home.
