I don't know, to be honest. I haven't heard a word about it one way or the other from anyone...not sure if that's a good sign or not.

I overheard one lecturer wondering if she had to strike..so maybe they will.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭leverarch12

heard its on next tuesday and all lectures will be cancelled! not sure how true that is though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭Simarillion

Well since SIPTU, IFUT and most unions voted to strike (god only knows why?) then most of the staff in the uni will be affected.

So that covers almost all lecturing staff, lab technicians, and Im pretty certain it includes: librarians, security, Admin, maintenance, etc. etc.

I heard talk that they'll close a lot of the buildings rather than have students wandering around, bur presuming we'll get an email about it.

Some lecturers mentioned it today. Got the feeling some aren't really that keen on striking but there you go

I should hope that they're not keen on it. It's all a bit of a farce.

they shouldn't be all striking because they're taking pay cuts from the all knowing FF government, the bastards........

    John said he'll be in.

The strike is on next week, and clearly a majority are in favour of the strike or it wouldn't be happening. no one is 'keen' on striking, its a last resort.

The IMF is the last resort, the strike is only a pitstop along the way.

Public Sector Strike Action on Tuesday 24th of November
Due to the strike action by University Staff on Tuesday 24th of November all Students’ Union services will be closed for the day.
This includes: the Students’ Union Office, the SU Shop, the SU Cloakroom, the College Bar, Smokey’s and the Wall Café. The SU Session that evening is also cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
University staff who are members of SIPTU, and IFUT will be on strike. However, the University will not be closed and staff who are not members of the participating trade unions will be working as normal. The Students’ Union has been assured that students entering the University next Tuesday will not be considered to be crossing the picket line.

Is the Library going to be open??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Allison91

    I have four lectures Tuesday.
    Two are definitely going ahead,
and the other two I'm not sure yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭Belmono

Staff still a little unsure about this. You'll find non-union staff are unwilling to cross the picket line. Lots of the uni will be out of action, and you may find that lectures which are scheduled may end up having to be cancelled if certain offices such as Security choose to go on strike (by this I mean certain buildings may be kept closed).
Grad ceremonies which had been scheduled for Tuesday have already been rescheduled for the Wednesday, while lots of extracurricular events (evening talks, etc) have already been postponed.
It's a bit strange that the Government has yet to step up and make a comment on this - maybe it'll only happen if Transport Unions decide to strike also.

One of my lectures next Tuesday is definitely cancelled but the other lecturers said they're not sure yet. My lecturers aren't in the union and aren't striking but they're not sure if the college will actually be fully open for people to get in if support staff (buildings/security) are striking.

My 5-6 lecture is cancelled...which is great!! Now I can cram for that Spanish test on Wednesday!! Now off to tescos for a six pack of red bull!!

Funny that, I was under the impression that the students paid for the students union with they levy!? At a time so close to exams when university staff are going on strike I would have though the SU would be siding with students who are missing out on there education

I heard the college would be locked up as there would be no security working...

The library website calendar says that the library will be open on Tuesday.

I wonder if someone forgot to update it or if they're actually going to open?

Well their website allows you to select that date for travelling and will allow you to go as far as giving payment info. Which is a good sign but I don't know if they'll accept payment info as I don't actually want a ticket.

The citylink website also allow that date to be selected so it is reasonably likely to assume that both of those bus services will be working on Tuesday.

So it looks like your visit can still go ahead.

(Obviously, I can't be certain without having actually contacted either company and dealt with a real person).

Does anyone know what the story is now that the strike is being deferred?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 440 ✭✭biddywiddy

I think that's just affecting city and county council workers. The strike in all other areas is going ahead.

Welll I'd be visiting people in Galway... not the university itself. Though I'm probably staying until Thursday... and isn't the strike called off in Galway, Cork and Clare now anyway?

Apparently. Wasn't there myself but my housemate popped in for a while. Said there were a few by the quad.

Quite a few at all the gates this morning at 8.30 . Maybe 20 at Wards gate, about 12 at Arts Millenium and 20 more at Ulster Bank. They were wandering over and back the road at Ulster Bank, blocking traffic coming in. Every few minutes they seemed to allow a few cars in.

Most of my lectures went ahead today, only a few cancellations.

I can't understand why the students union services are shut down??

I don't think that they're legally allowed to do that.

They look like they're working on a technicality! They're not actually stopping in front of traffic, just taking turns crossing the road really really slowly! It all looks very childish to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Allison91

I picked a bad day to practice my driving I drove in by the bank and they were crossing back and forth..I thought they said they wouldn't obstruct people going to college?
And my mother on the way out said they just stood in the middle of the road staring at her...so silly.
When I was driving out by the Quad they didn't bother me at all and just let people pass.
And just heard there might be another strike next Thursday.
But there was hardly any traffic, so that was nice!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭PomBear

I was on picket today, we didn't block traffic, we crossed the road while cars were coming up to let people know they're crossing a picket. We let all cars leave the college without doing this, only cars going in.

Any student who entered campus today was not crossing the picket line. This was made clear to students well in advance of today.

Yet, my housemate was (admittedly, temporarily) delayed while trying to drive in this morning. Even though she crossed no picket line.

I'm not saying anyone did anything wrong, but I firmly believe that people have a right to use those roads unhindered if they so choose.

Both my parents are public sector workers. Neither have striked in recent memory but I can remember my father picketing once and he didn't even come close to getting in anyone's way.

    Shame on you.

I know a person that wanted to go the Kingfisher Gym this morning and was accosted and questioned about his intentions. This person, now unemployed, has paid his taxes and had to encounter your ilk.

accosted and questioned about his intentions.

    That definitely shouldn't have happened.

No-one (relevant to this strike, at least) has the right to act in such a manner.

Hmm, unprovable story about unnamed person who had a crime committed against them by more unnamed people? Yeah that definitely happened.

I severely have my doubts that this was a credible picketer. Myself and a few friends were given out to for being aggressive, walking too slow in front of the cars :D

oh and shame on you for down-talking me for expressing one of my basic human rights for what I believe is just

Picket in a visible yet non intrusive manner.

Be by the entrances so people know what's going on. Make your point there.

But when you get in the way, you're just going to annoy people and they'd probably be less sympathetic to your cause due to that.

It doesn't send as big a message but it doesn't piss anyone off either.

But not everyone you treated like that actually was crossing a picket line. (students were given a guarantee that entering campus wasn't crossing the picket line).

And that still doesn't give you the right to occlude the road. Only the gardaí and University authorities would have that right in this case.
