Is it essential to offer a fish as a choice of main course?

    It's a traditional Irish wedding.

Because we're just about to confirm the menu, and have only learned recently how many people going that absolutely hate salmon (I never realised how much some people hate it:eek:)

So we were thinking of a choice of either of these two:

    1. Turkey & ham or Beef (or)
    2. Turkey & ham or Seabass

Although the seabass is pretty expensive and brings the price up a good bit. So is it essential to offer a choice of fish?

    Thanks:)

Is it a winter or summer wedding? If its summer I think you'd need the fish as the other dishes are likely to be quite heavy.

I think that it is not essential to offer fish. An option that is coming up quite a bit at weddings I have been to has been chicken or beef. I am sure that turkey or beef would be fine as a choice. I know that I always go for turkey if it an option- but that is just me!
We had beef or salmon at our wedding and to be honest, I noticed that about 80% of people went for the beef.
Don't forget though-at the end of the day,it is your wedding. You choose what you like!! People are there to celebrate your big day!:)

    Thanks for quick replies:)

    It's a summer wedding, next May '10.

I originally had thought of beef or salmon. But since I mentioned salmon, everybody I've talked to say they can't stand it.

And after tasting the food last week, the turkey and ham were fantastic, as was the seabass too.

True I know "it's our day etc etc" but not sure on this one.........

I've never seen fish offered at a wedding to be honest and Ive been to plenty of weddings at thisd stage, its your day and your choice, but no I wouldnt see it as essential at all, remember msot weddings dont even have a choice. Hotels always make a few extra meals just in case a guest says they dont like that meal, the hotel we had made vegetarian lasagne and beef, maybe 3 of each just in case so we just went with one choice.

Don't know if this helps but my oh a chef for a hotel that does alot of weddings and he thinks about 80:20 have beef over salmon: but that if people don't have a fish choice they automatically get about 40 vegetarians in a wedding of 200!!! Most requesting fish! I'm doing beef or salmon for a summer wedding...

We are having an Italian wedding and will be offering beef or fish, but in Ireland Ive only ever been offered fish at a wedding once and that was Lemon Sole. When I come to think of it, Ive rarely been offered a second meat option. As I dont really eat red meat, I would ask for the veggie option on the day and thats always been a winner. Wouldnt be going to mad expense or worry about it, choose whatever you like (within reason :) ) and trust that everyone will be there to enjoy the day!

I also prefer fish over meat so if there isn't a fish option then I'll be veggie for the day.

If it was my wedding I'd chose beef over turkey and ham for the menu as turkey (imo) is so bland and by the time it gets to the table it's dried out. Ham is delicious so I'd just ham without the turkey or beef plus a fish plate. Strangely, I'd pick ham over fish but definitely not if there's turkey on the plate.

If you factor in the fact that it is harder to cook fish correctly and also fish does not react well to sitting under hot lights waiting to be served. Any wedding I was ever at that served fish it was overcooked from sitting under hot lights for too long.

    Id go turkey/ham and beef.

    Again thanks for the input.

We decided on turkey & ham or seabass in the end. The seabass was just too nice to turn down.

And we got a decent rate too which I was surprised at too.
