USB key wont work, can you help?

When i plug it in and open it, this message appears:

"you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it."

I then get asked do i want to reformat it. I press ok and then i get a warning saying "this disk is write protected"

I dont mind losing whatever data i have on it, i just want to get it working again.

Can anyone help?

What make is it?
Depending on the make, there is usually specific format tools from some providers that you can download.
Have a look on their site (usually under "Support" or "Downloads") if its a well known brand.

1. Download and install the HP Drive Key Boot Utility
2. Open the desktop icon and select the correct flash drive under device
3. Select the file system you want to format to (FAT, FAT32, NTFS)
4. Tick Quick Format
5. Click start
