trek 1000 for 400 or 1200 for 500?

Heya Folks,

I'm looking at getting a road bike and I'm aiming at doing some hill stuff summer next year around france so I need to get a bike! I'm going to get a second hand one since I'm not sure whether the entire thing will come off and I've plenty other bits draining my money at the minute - there's a 63cm trek 1000 and a 60cm trek 1200 for sale at the minute. The 1000 has a Shimano Tiagra groupset and carbon forks apparently - no details on the 1200. I'm 6'3 / 6'4 and very new to the racing side of things - what do you guys think and what is the important info to get from the two sellers?

Which ever fits you better.
I never knew the 1000 came with a carbon fork. Are you sure that's not the 1200?

63cm? :eek: Even at 6'4" that's likely to be a bit roomy... my guess is the 60cm would be better but it depends on your proportions and flexibility etc. Explosive_Cornflake is absolutely right when he says fit comes first. I think the 1000 came with sora shifters and the 1200 came with tiagra, but the groupset comes a distant second to a good fit.

Price-wise... 400 to 500 seems reasonable if not an absolute bargain. There's always wiggleroom when buying second hand.

The newer Trek 1000s came with a carbon fork, depends on the age of the bike. The one I had didn't have a carbon fork but it was very old, I think 2001.

But fit is most important.

The 1000 probably has at most a Tiagra rear derailleur with the rest of the groupset being Sora, for what it's worth.

To be honest second-hand value between the 1000 and the 1200 should not typically diverge by €100. Other than that I would certainly spend a bit more on the 1200.

If the 63cm bike fits you, you should certainly have wiggle room with the seller as he is going to have an awfully difficult time shifting it, it is a very very big frame size.

I reckon the 63 will be too big for you. The 1000's had a carbon fork from around 05 onwards.

On paper the 1200 will fit you better but you need to tell us the model year or just describe the color scheme. If its a very early model is will be absolute poverty spec and could be worse than the 1000... older ones have quill stems, alloy forks and seatposts, crappy vuelta airline rims and some nasty finish kit. You would be looking for 04 onwards for the 1200. The newer the better.

I have a Trek 1.9 ful Ultegra groupset, just checked the cateye and its done 1084klms, its a 56cm might be a bit small for you.
