Converting to view on a dvd player

Hi, Iv tried burning some clips on my pc for viewing on my dvd player using windows media player but the wont work. Im not sure if this is doable but is there a pc programs that will allow you to burn to dvd disc so that the files will play on a standard dvd player? Cheers,
