UPC Multiroom - How does it work?

I'm thinking about getting Multiroom and had two quick questions about how it works.

Are multiroom boxes connected to the main box or do they run via extra installation points?

If they're connected to the main box, can they be used to stream digital recordings from the main DVR box. I'm assuming probably not. Will UPC give extra DVR boxes for multiroom viewing?

    Thanks.

Multiroom boxes run off of extra cable points and aren't directly connected to the main box. *

No, unfortunately it isn't possible to stream between boxes.

However it is a great idea and part of the future IMO. All the pay TV providers in the US are now doing this or preparing to do so, it is called Whole Home DVR and it is very cool.

BTW you could fake it using Slingbox.

Yes, you can get a DVR as a multiroom box from UPC, but they'll charge more.

    * Strictly speaking they are on the same ring and could be made to communicate with one another using DOCSIS or ethernet over cable, but it isn't done here.

    Thanks bk.

I was wondering what the point of the ethernet socket was on my DVR.

Is it a once off charge for a DVR box for the multiroom or a standing charge?

If you get Multiroom, is it just €8.50 extra a month or is it €8.50 + €3 rental for the installation point?

The ethernet posts aren't currently used, but they could be used in future for VOD, IPTV type services or even whole home DVR, but I haven't heard of any plans.

I don't know, you'll need to contact UPC to find out. Let us know when you do.

    Will do!

I called them earlier, explained what I wanted, was greeted with a "Hold on" and then promptly sent back to the Customer Service menu to queue again so I sent them a Call Back request. I'll see what happens.

Answer: 8,50€ net. They don't make this terribly clear, but I've been getting it for years and it's only the amount they advertise (oh how I miss those days when it was only 5€ :( )

Thanks. They still haven't called me back and the customer service telephone were down yesterday and seem to be down again today.

Finally got back to me. If you get a DVR box, it's €13.50 a month though I completely forgot to ask how much is the installation cost on it.

€50 install cost per MRV point.

Yeah, I called back to check on that. There's a €30 charge for the box plus the €50 installation fee for the point. But I already have an extra point installed.

We are getting another box for multi room viewing. We already have a wire connected in the 2nd room for broadband. It has a spare connection/port on it. Can we save on the 50 euro and just ask for the 30 euro box with the wire to be delivered.

Is is that simple? just connect the box to the TV and to the point thingy...
