Applying for air gun licence

Hi, I am looking to apply for a licence for an air rifle for hunting rabbits. I am 18. I am currently in college in England but will be going back to Ireland at christmas, easter and summer. Will this affect my application seeing as how I am not in Ireland full time?

Do I need to have a security alarm on my house? Or just a gun storage safe? Would a Doberman suffice? (lol)

How long do these applications usually take to come through? I plan on applying when I go home at christmas.

How much does it cost? And how much would the whole setup for hunting rabbits cost? Im talking gun (preferably .177 as I already have some pellets), gun bag, scope or whatever else is necessary. I don't have much money so any recommendations of lower price range guns would be appreciated.

Can I buy a second hand gun and put that down on my application, or does it have to be new? Would it be wise or unwise to get a second hand gun as a first time air gunner?

Any answers to these questions would be much appreciated.

To answer some of your questions,
    • air rifle applications are treated the same as,say a .22
    • the licencing laws have been changed.there is an 8 page app. form which you can download from www.garda.ie. dont know how long it will take now,as these new forms are only taking effect this year.
    • as regards .177,imo. you would be better off with a .22 air rifle for rabbits.22's pack a better punch for quarry this size.Last thing you want is wounded quarry.
    • as for price, you get what you pay for.I purchased a .22 BSA xl Tactical with 3-9x40 scope €500
    • second hand is second hand. How many pellets have been put through? is the spring on its last legs?
    • makes no difference if gun is new or 2nd hand when applying for a license
Hopefully this will be of some use to you.
