I'm pretty sure my phone has some crappy limit on it. I don't use text speak though, it's too hard.

Why do you need text speak when there are free texts?

Don't use it myself but it doesn't bother me when other people do, other than writing things like "ta" instead of "to" (obviously if you're gonna text speak use "2")???? and one I've noticed aswell is "2mara". Since when did the letter o become replaced with a ???

It's been around for at least 100 years and then became popular again with the use of text messaging. It was useful to reduce text length, reduced key strokes and reduced cost in some cases.

Predictive text and charges will reduce its use again. If it conveys the message then it is effective and valid as communication. It simply has a time and place to be used.

You also have to understand some people actually are that bad at English spelling. I personally hate talking to people who say "axed" instead of "asked" but that is mostly when in the US and some people say it is just part of the dialect (Ebonics) which seems like nonsense to me.

I just use free texts to any network (Meteor) and often end up sending a 4-5 message text at a time! Not a fan of text speak, predictive text is so much faster (and it has the added advantage of being legible.)

A text is an 'SMS' - Short Message Service. It is intended only to transmit a very simple and short message. There is no reason you should ever need to go over 160 chars.

Use the phone for it's primary purpose and have a fuckin normal conversation with your friends.

I have lots of normal conversations with my friends! But I live in different counties/countries to a lot of them, and phonecalls are expensive, and emails aren't always practical due to lack of internet access.

So we text each other, and its generally not "simple and short" - it's often an in-depth analysis of the state of affairs in each others' lives! But I still would never ever use text speak. Apart from anything else, it's sort of disrespectful - I hate to get messages like that!

    I'll stop now

Because vowels are stupid. My favourite song explains further:

    Dude.
    "A" is a vowel.
    Sometimes Y.

Because most phones have an average character spacing of 160 characters therefore , while being txt speak it shortens down words and is cheaper!

I never got used to using predictive and I'm sure as **** not going to start now, so it's easier/quicker/occasionally cheaper to use some bit of text speak-2 instead of to/too, u instead of you, dropping the g off of -ing etc. Though my little brother does occasionally send me texts that I cannot understand for the life of me! As in, it's not abbreviations, it's just gibberish. And somebody I know just can't use text speak, I get texts off him where it's gone over the 160 limit and he's trying to abbreviate to get it back down, it's so cute :p

I find T9 predictive text to be great, it is a bugger having to teach it some of the more popular swears and local place names etc.

God yeah you'd imagine they'd preload a few good fook works loike.

Again i only use it to reduce the msg length to keep it under the 160 (or under 320). and yes my phone goes over that but then it costs more

why do people spell 'the' as 'teh'? is it supposed to be cool? I think its retarded

I'd probably forgive that one, since it could be a straight typo, dyslexia, or a brain-to-hand wiring thing where one hand works faster than intended when touch-typing......

It's courtesy to re-read something before hitting "Submit", but we're all human, after all....

But using "de" or "da" IS "detest-speak" and is unforgiveable!

i see people do it all the time, more than once in a paragraph. i dont think its from dyslexia

    Another Txt Speak thread!

Why bother? Do i use it? Do you care if i use it? Why must you start these nonsense topics? What do you gain from knowing why do i use it? Why do people use it? Do you need to be told? Why does anybody care about this?

I'm proud of the fact that i text using correct grammer and real words! I hate text talk!! Its too hard to understand and not worth the effort!!

    ;):D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭AidySevenfold

I use it a little bit, but nothing serious. Don't use it on the computer, maybe webtexts. It's just handier texting though, as I suck at the predictive text.

But I never really have credit, so it's okay :P.

    Call-me's are the future! :)

Thank you! thats exactly why I use it!:D I don't go over board though...I'll just shorten words like though to tho.

It annoys me greatly. I was once sent a text message which comprised of gibberish and what really stood out was the use of the word buz instead of bus. I tend to not bother replying to them.

I've found that there is a direct correlation between usage of text speak and being enthralled and excited by something called the X-Factor.
