Why do you use text speak?

Just a question for those of you who actually use text speak in texts.

Why?

It just seems like an awful lot of added work to make yourself look like you've an IQ of 60. Isn't it easier to just turn on predictive text and type normally instead of having to add whole brand new "words" into your phone's dictionary like "lyk" or "m8" or "wat" or whatever other illegible things you've come up with? I could understand "u" or "r" if you're in a hurry/you don't have enough space to send it as one text (I do this if I'm desperate) but otherwise.. just.. why?

Because most phones have an average character spacing of 160 characters therefore , while being txt speak it shortens down words and is cheaper!

You can send longer texts now but it's charged per 160 characters in general.

Ugh I hate text speak so much . The only time i'd EVER use it is in a webtext where they don't let you go over the 160 character limit, but on an actual phone, I'd rather go with sending two legible texts then one ridiculous one.

I want to know where this new phenomenon of 'worse than text speak' text speak came from, it can't have anything to do with being lazy because instead of people saying 'you' or 'me' they say things like 'yhouu' and 'meii'
Dunno if anyone else had ever noticed things like that, but a lot of my wanna-be D4 cousins, but from wiclow,talk like that on facebook and msn and such. It drives me crazy!

it probably derived from school children texting under their desks, the shorter the words the less likelihood of getting caught. That's why i started using text language. Still use it in university, it''s just easier.
Plus when you get a lot of texts its kind of hard to reply to all of them in time using proper language.
Also predictive texting is harder to write with when using proper language in my opinion because you have to change it every second. It's much easier to just type it in.

Text speak is annoying but what you just described really gets on my nerves and makes me cringe. "Kule" instead of "cool" or "sekc" instead of "sexy". I just don't understand how anyone could see this as trendy and not stupid.

Why do you use text speak?
