yes. In my opinion, we should have a thread where every "txt spk" type post is dumped, as a reserve of spare letters for others to use. "The spare letters thread".

i can handle it in a short post, less than 10 or 15 words. after that It drives me mental and I usually don't bother reading the post

would tbh and wtf not fall under text speak ?

They are Internet slang words and didnt originate from text speak and plus they are generally used as part of a sentence, where as the entire txt speak sentence is abbreviated

Not only boards, ideally it wouldn't be used anywhere.

there's a huge difference between an abbreviation and text speak. wat is not an abbreviation of what. how much time does it save not typing h?

i don't even use text speak in text messages, and if i get a text message in text speak i ignore it, or if i'm feeling generous i'll tell them to cop the **** on, stop being a 12 year old and text me properly.

They're acronyms. "wat da fuk" and "2 b onest" are text speak.

Sometimes I use "txt spk" ironically, but I'd be more in favor of banning terrible 4chan memes instead of text speak. They are infinitely more annoying.

Oh God, txt spk drives me mad!! My 12yr old daughters texts and Bebo page read something like this:
"hi wher u? u goin 2 da match lata? omg did u watch x factor, d twinz are brutal!! luv ya babz xxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx

Mind you, she IS only 12, so I'l make allowances, but if she's still communicating like this when she's 16, I'l be chopping her fingers off myself!!!* Text speak is ok for children, NOT adults!!!

*Disclaimer - If anyone from the NSPCC is reading this, I won't really chop her fingers off;)

Aw man it does my head in. Even in actual text messages.

The problem with text speak is there is no universal dictionary; so different people text different abbreviations leading to confusion and time wasting. Sometimes a sentence can mean three or four different things :-(

If you don't get her to stop it now, then there may be no chance to save her later. You don't need to cut off all or a lot of her fingers, just threaten her a bit so she knows you're annoyed with it and then maybe one finger to show her you mean business.

If someone sends me this gibberish I'll text them back and ask them for it in English....

OK, if I'm feeling charitable I'll let them away with one "u" or "2", but other than that - NO WAY!

While the mobile phone companies do actually charge "per 160-character part of text", rather than per text (and they don't highlight this) there's still no excuse.

Imagine if your favourite author said "well, those extra pages cost money to print, so I'll just type in gibberish and hope for the best" :D

    * assuming, that is, that text-speak people have a high enough IQ and attention span to actually read a whole book

ah jaysus people! do we really need another thread about text language???
Complaining about it is not going to stop people using it. instead it just makes you seem like 80 year olds, that sit in a rocking chair all day whinging about 'those darn youths':pac:

My 36 year old sister uses this in emails, texts and on facebook. Then she wonders why I don't reply.

Not ignoring her its just I haven't a f*cking clue what she's talking about.

Wow, she uses lots of punctuation! She's still missing 25 question marks and 50 exclamation marks, though.

An adult who uses der in place of there, or l8r in place of later, for any reason whatsoever, should be committed.
