I think that's a huge generalisation, and a bit of wishful thinking tbh.
The statistics for the age teens loose their virginity in Ireland would vary hugely due to location, social class, education, etc..

I'm a bit beyond that age now (26) but when I was 16 - 17 I remember it being about 50-50. About 80-20 by mid 17.

I'd love to know why you think the vast majority are virgins...

I know for legal and prosecution reasons an age limit is needed but do people really think that increasing the age limit is going to dissuade 2 horny 16 year olds from riding each other silly? I was 14 when i first got me rock and roll and no law was gonna keep me from tapping that. Granted i hadn't a clue what i was doing so maybe we should be taught about it earlier. Porno class in school wouldn't be a bad idea.

There should be some sort of graduated age of consent, with punishments varying in severity depending on how young they are. For example consent from a 14yo doesn't mean absolutely nothing the way consent from an 8yo does.

Guys who have sex with girls of 14/15/16 are probably opportunists more than paedophiles, perhaps keeping an eye on them (to prevent true paedophilia) and community service would be more appropriate than jailtime.

Why should I be joking. 15 is the age of consent in Sweden, my home country. In Sweden you still don't have to big a problem with teenage pregnancies, unlike Ireland where you see teenage mums left, right and centre.

And reducing the age of consent is going to help this how? The fact is Sweden and Ireland and entirely different countries with different cultures etc. Increased education and less of an incentive to get pregnant by reforming our over generous welfare system (woooahhhhh controversial) needs to be implemented here, lowering the age isn't going to reduce the rate of teen pregnancies in Ireland one bit.

I think 16 should be the age of consent. Many people would be in 6th year by that stage and in fairness, most 16 year olds are well up for a bit of riding!!
It seems most people start having sex when they get to 16/17/18 anyways.

If the national average blood alcohol content while driving was twice that of the current level you wouldn't advokate highering it. If the majority of people were taking heroin or cocaine you wouldn't think they should be legalised.

I'm fairly happy with the age of consent at the moment btw, I just think your logic is a little off.

I mean come on, who would really talk to a 16 year old boy like that? I would be afraid of putting ideas in his head. For the record I have not been to jail and did not warn the young lad off.

He is a nice young lad and i think fondly of him. he treats her (and us) with a rare respect and is always nice to have around. There are many around here who I would hate to see her with but thankfully she is a sensible young lady who has high standards.
