Dog, cat, horse, guinea pig or another animal that Western society looks down on eating?

I've had dogs all my life, and I've had a cat or two, and I've got a guinea pig who I love to bits right now. I love horses and have worked with them since I was 7. That said, if any of them were prepared and presented for me to eat, I reckon I'd give it a try (and have tried horse)-- it's a bit hypocritical not to, imo, just because we see cows, pigs, sheep etc as food doesn't mean all cultures do and doesn't mean they're any less than pets or horses.

So, would you take a chance at eating Fido?

I've seen a lot of things to convince me that pigs are smarter than, cleaner than and almost as loyal as dogs, if given the chance (obviously being stuffed in a dark room with no means to clean themselves doesn't exactly bring out their best attributes).
And I don't feel guilty about eating a pig, so I reckon I wouldn't over a dog either.

I'll eat anything that's tasty, including you!

I'd draw the line at dogs and possibly humans, everything else is fair game.

On a side note, if you were trapped in the mountains like the lads in "alive" and you had a live dog or a dead buddy.... which would you eat first?

Tbh I'd probably eat human meat if it was cooked.

i think i'd try horse. anything big so that the body part would be less identifiable.

i dont think i could face puss' kidney slapped on a plate infront of me tbh

I wouldn't eat any of those animals because they're ... pets.

In general, cows, pigs and other animals that are traditionally eaten here aren't seen as being domestic animals, pets, but more so bred for the purpose of human consumption.

Think I would too to be perfectly honest, sure they're already dead! Wouldn't make a habit of it though, would just try it for the sake of it.

According to some cannibal serial killer (forget the name) people taste just like pork. People bacon sounds pretty good right about now. :pac:

@ ham_n_mustard, probably the dead guy, I couldn't bring myself to actually kill something.

Flawed logic to be perfectly honest.. they're only pets in this culture. Some Asian countries and/or cultures eat dogs and cats and don't see them as pets at all. Guinea pig is quite a delicacy in New Guinea (go figure). We keep rabbits as pets but they're also used for food. Cows make surprisingly decent companion animals, same way horses can be. Horses were used for food for centuries. Pigs are brilliant, intelligent animals and the pot bellied variety is used for pet purposes, too.

It all depends on your upbringing and where you are, in fairness.

    Oh, sure.

And considering where I am, I think it's somewhat normal that I'd consider things like dogs, cats and horses to be pets rather than eating material and think the opposite of commonly eaten animals like pigs, sheep and cows.

I think I'd feel more guilty for eating a dog over a cow, because I've been brought up with dogs as pets and companions, where as cows were always just ... animals in a field that ended up on my plate.

In general, I feel guilty for eating any meat. If I wasn't allergic to wheat and dairy, I wouldn't eat meat at all.

out of choice. If i went somewhere that had human on the menu I really think I'd feel obliged to try it just to see what it's like. I'd be far to curious to turn down the chance.

Depends on nice it was, in saying that getting a regular supply of dead human to cook would be difficult and illegal. Also, as for the dog vs human purely for logistical purposes killing the dog to eat it would be a terrible idea as it could be quite useful in helping rescuers find you with it's barking.

I'm sure some of us have tried dog or cat without knowing. Especially those of us who have ate from chinese takeaways.

I tried cuy (guinea pig) in Ecuador and it was all right. Wouldn't be mad about it. I've tried lots of weird shít most people wouldn't even dream of eating.

I would not like to eat dog or cat as I have owned both as pets so I couldn't stop myself thinking about them if it was put in front of me. All the rest I would eat.

Chipper my mam used to go to in Dublin (before I was born, not in any way recently :P) apparently got shut down and sold off when health inspectors found half a greyhound in the freezer

My rule with meat is that I'll only eat an animal i'm emotionally prepared to kill myself.

I quite like dogs, horses, cats and elephants, and wouldn't be happy to kill one.

Anything else is fair game. (;))

What people want to eat is their own business, but if you order something in a restaurant or take away, you deserve to know what's actually in your meal.
If you order lamb, they shouldn't serve you greyhound and attempt to pass it off as lamb. That's completely deceitful.

    I'm undecided on pigs too.

They're smart animals, I could definitely have a pig as a companion animal, but mostly I'd think it looked delicious, then I would knock it on the head a couple times.

    I love bacon.

Not all of Western society looks down on eating horse, I think pretty much just the English speaking parts. In France and Switzerland at least horse is not uncommon. And it tastes just fine.

Wikipedia covers the taboo around eating horse pretty well.
