Anybody else try those 500ml bottles in lidl/aldi you know the 6 for 7 euro. I found them lovely. For the life of me I cannot think of the name of them but they are a german pills.

Perlenbacher? Or something like that I think

The recession made me pregnant :D Can't find a job myself but thankfully my other half earns enough to keep us all going.

Great time to get bargains on baby stuff :P

Spaten is damn nice! :)

Spaten is always only €2 for 500ml bottles in Aldi, and is a real premium beer. It can be got in some Centras for this price too. It's probably my favourite beer along with Pilsner Urquell. You haven't tasted great beer until you've tried Pilsner Urquell.

Hate Bav with a passion, but then, don't like beer at all really!

Really IMO the best place to shop at the minute would be Dunnes Stores, or to a lesser extent Tesco. I never looked at it as real cheap, but lately its been great, and there is a huge majority of Irish products compared to Lidl/Aldi which are ALL from Europe.
I mean, I don't expect people to go and try finding Irish pineapples and mangos, But why oh why do we need to buy apples from new zealand and pears from Spain?! It just doesn't make sense.
Also in Dunnes: 3 irish free range chickens for 9 euro. (well its actually a mix'n'match on loads of meat products! lol)

I was broke during the Celtic Tiger days. I didn't buy a house or get into debt. I worked factorys and other unskilled labour. Then I started doing well (software) when the country went to shít. I thought I'd be able to be smug about it. Some cash, but most importantly no debt or negative equity. But the smugness was wiped off my face quickly enough when I realised I was going to be punished anyway with higher taxes.

That said, I'm still better off now than ever :p.

The irony is that while I cut back on things by not driving etc im still spending like crazy on stuff like clothes, nights out etc or it seems that way because everything is so cheap now.
My shoes don't have holes in em!

    Beer is for girls.

Tonnes of cheap vodka and wine from Tesco. Stronger, gets you wasted faster, lasts longer (well not in my case...).

    Beer is for Girls?

Vodka and wine are for real men? wtf? when the hell did this turn around happen? Did it come in with purple shirts, nivea ****é for men and metrosexuals?

    I haven't changed at all...
I never over spent to begine with and I'm still broke.

I honestly wouldn't know if we came out of recession tomorrow.

reading books is cheap and a great way to spend time. There's a whole world inside every book (well the good ones anyway) and they only cost a tenner!

+ 1,000,000 on reading, only problem is it's not cheap!! I read 3-4 books a week, if I paid a tenner each I'd be broke in no time! For the true recessionist, it's libraries all the way. Unfortunately the libraries in Ireland are mostly poorly stocked, but they'll keep you going.

To hop on the beer wagon, Staropramen seems to be €2 for a 500ml bottle in a lot of places, definitely in Lidl and I've seen it in a few offies as well.

You do realise that Bavaria is a region in Southern German don't you?

It's also a region in the Netherlands, where Bavaria Beer is made.

I know the recession is a terrible time but there is one good thing going to come out of it. We are all going to be on a level playing field when it is all over. There were people making so much money that there heads were in the clouds now they have come down to earth with a bang.
The country was gone crazy, we hardly had time to speak to one another.

I doubt that, this recession was predicted long before it happened. You can be guaranteed some people will make out like bandits now that they can buy up everything for half the price. We'll be far worse off, everyone even including the upper middle class are now in debt to banks, serious debt where they can't pay back banks because what they bought is longer and probably will never be worth what they paid for it.

This whole thing will play into the hands of those in power and cripple the working class.

You must be about 16 or something. I drink beer and other alcoholic beverages because I enjoy drinking them. I don't drink to get wasted as fast as possible.

I only drink to get drunk. Alcoholic drinks taste foul to me, and I only go near them if I want to get drunk. If I want a sociable gathering in a pub I'll drnk Locozade or Cidona. If I want to get drunk I drink alcohol.

    What other reason is there?

    P.S I'm 28 btw
