Now that we are all broke and likely to be even broker after decembers budget...have you made any changes that have enhanced your life ?...or that have made you happier than you were before?..e.g Iv discovered Bavaria Beer....totally lovin it at the moment....i can get pissed for less than a tenner!

So whats your recession nugget?

Aldi
Teco/Supervalu brand items (they're* all the same)
Drink at home then hit club instead of pub before (only sometimes)
Gave up smoking

Life's abit less materialistic now, it's great for small-talk, it's nice to see that if you buy some clothes/a pair of shoes, they're not "old" after a week.

recession has just made me wary.

Am doing the boring thing, saving.

Don't know what's coming in the budget or what next year will bring, so can't bring myself to my patriotic duty of spending. Keep thinking of the headlines a couple of years ago about the 'rip-off ireland' and how the private sector screwed us when they had the chance. They are the ones now crying about our lack of spending. But everything in the republic is 30% more expensive than in the north, which itself is more expensive than the continent.

Cash is king, boys, keep it until you are getting great deals.

I was broke before the recession and I'm still just as broke. Bavaria is actually a nice beer always has been. Drinking it right now although I'm not looking forward to the owning my own head in the morning. Also hopefully people will discover from staying at home more, that TV is crap and that reading books is cheap and a great way to spend time. There's a whole world inside every book (well the good ones anyway) and they only cost a tenner!

I've been on a Newcastle Brown Ale buzz the last week or two. Not as big a kick as you might expect from those hardy Geordie backstards, but for 1.80 a can you can't go wrong, can you?

(Disclaimer: you can get cheaper beer, true. But if it tastes like it's mixed with piss, and it looks like it's mixed with piss, it's probably worse than that ... it's probably cheap, central European beer)

You've only discovered that now?! If memory serves me right, you could get 6 cans of that for €7 back in 2006 - served me well for manys a night!

EDIT: Maybe it was 8 not sure

i'm gonna have to give bavaria a go

the recession has allowed me to frequent cafes for tea without feeling like i'm being bent over and rammed.

I'm not too gone on dutch beer tbh. The best 'cheap' beer for me is probably Karpackie (Poilsh) - 4 cans for €5, and widely available. Hackenberg and Primus (both Belgian) are also very good beers at around the €1.30 a can mark.

Warsteiner (German) is a fantastic bottled beer, but it's usually only sold by the case - 24 330ml bottles for €24 , but I've seen bottles sold individually for €1 in places.

Keep an eye out for special offers on the real premiums too - Spaten, Tyskie, Erdinger etc.

I'm sorry but Bavaria is nothing like budweiser. Budweiser is just beer flavoured water. Bavaria actually has a beer like flavour whereas bud has a watery pissy flavour.

Moosehead is a fantastic recession beer, if your local Supervalu aren't cnuts. Was 6 for €6 330ml bottles a few months ago, 5% and damn tasty. Then the manager copped it was popular and put the price up to €9 for 6. Don't buy that any more, sadly.

Anybody else try those 500ml bottles in lidl/aldi you know the 6 for 7 euro. I found them lovely. For the life of me I cannot think of the name of them but they are a german pills.
