Recently employed, dont get paid for a month, can I claim till I'm paid? I can't live on nothing, dont get paid till the end of November. If I claim now will i have to pay what I have claimed since i stared work? I have tried calling the welfare office but BRILLIANTLY, they decide too close for 2 hours for lunch and close at 4 so I can't tell them I'm working. Are they going to see that I collected my dole today even though i'm working for the last week?

You'll not be entitled to Jobseekers as you wont be JOB-SEEKING...

Your not looking for work so your not entitled to any payment. If you were previously getting JSB or JSA you have to sign off on the day you start your employment.

Cant you get an overdraft from your bank to tide you over while your waiting on your wages??

Officially you are supposed to sign off once that you have commenced employment, however am in the same situation as yourself, went to the Community Welfare Officer this morning to explain my own situation(first pay day is not until end of November), and he has sorted me out no problem with an Exceptional Needs Payment, and will be issuing a cheque to the value of 204.30 each week up until I get paid(will need to pay this back eventually of course!)

Send the welfare office a letter, ref seeing the CWO not sure where you are located but would be worth a try.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not going to get an overdraft dlambirl, it will cost me money to do so, why should I do that. I'm going to try and get the Exceptional Needs Payment to tide me over till i get paid. Seems so ridiculous that i have to resort to sending a letter to get this sorted. Anyways, Thanks for the assistance.

OP, I am confused by your last post. Why is it ridiculous that you have to apply for an exceptional needs payment? Is the SW dept is to assume that you are paid monthly?

The country is running out of money, do you feel that you should get extra dole payments even though you are working? ( I specifically ask this only because I pick that from your post) Do you feel that it is ridiculous that you must pay it back?

I am absolutely dumbfounded. Is it any wonder this country is financially on its knees when "kind hearted" (i.e. incompetent) dole officers will continue to give people 205 euro a week AFTER THEY'VE STARTED WORK??

Get an overdraft, a loan from a family member or a credit union loan - don't sponge off the social welfare! ARGH! This sort of thing really gets on my nerves!

If you have an employment contract you might get a loan. Or least an overdraft. Show your contract to the bank to help get approved.

Or ask HR for a sub, even just one week to tide you over.
It's not an unusual request at all. You might get refused, hey no harm in asking

Is this a payment that has to be paid back? If not, you may get laughed out of this office....

Description of Scheme
Under the SWA scheme, a Health Service Executive Area may make a single payment to help meet essential, once-off, exceptional expenditure, which a person could not reasonably be expected to meet out of their weekly income. These payments are known as Exceptional Needs Payments (ENPs).

Qualifying Conditions
Eligible people would normally be in receipt of a social welfare or health service executive payment. However, there is no automatic entitlement to such payments. ENPs are payable at the discretion of the Health Executive taking into account the requirements of the legislation and all the relevant circumstances of the case.

Disqualification
Normally persons in full-time education, in full-time employment, or directly involved in a trade dispute are not eligible to apply for ENPs. However people who are participating in certain Education or Work Schemes or the qualified adult and qualified child/children of a person on strike may apply.

Look, you're dealing with a government department, you can't just make a call and make an application by phone, everything is done by forms and letters.
Now that you're working you'll see the same with the Revenue even if they have PAYE online

I'll respond to some of this. Firstly, i'll keep it simple. Why are you given the JSA/JSB? I believe, correct me if i'm wrong, but you are provided with an income to support yourself because you don't have one, if you don't have any income how are you to support yourself? I have a loan and had to already re-structure it and can't get another, or a top up because i'm only just employed. And i already have borrowed from the one person in the family that has any disposable income. I'm NOT asking for EXTRA dole payments, i'm going to continue receiving support from the government until I can pay it back, which I will. Like anyone else does that is receiving JSA/JSB by in a way paying back the government through income tax.

I don't expect the SW dept to assume anything, but i don't see why it's such a huge deal to support someone until they have their own source of income. Because of the situation i'm in and the systems in place I cannot get paid for 1 month, and I have asked a number of times if this could be changed.

Eth0 i really have no idea where you're coming from, put yourself in the situation and think about it. You have no income, you wont for a month, what do you do. Who will give you a loan with no income or savings. I think you need to re think what you're saying, there's a difference between after you start work and when you get paid. I'm not stealing off anyone if I'm going to pay it back.

Thanks mike mac. I think SW have overlooked this a bit, i know it can be a bit messy getting money back off people, but i think they could get this back through your wages somehow.

I was talking to a person over the phone in the sw office and got an honest answer from them with a solution. It was very off the record,basically dont say anything and get the dole, and then when you are due to get paid, say what you were doing and offer to pay it back over a few weeks. It is frowned upon but people have done similar. Since i cant get any other form of income at the moment i'm going to do this. I've worked since i was old enough was unemployed for a few months before and DID NOT claim the JSA which i would have been fully entitled to as I felt I had no need for it and lived off my savings as i felt enough people were sponging off the state. If anyone has anything to say go ahead...

You didnt bother approaching any institution for an overdraft-Your little friend in the SW is setting you up...........

No Axel, I finish work in time to collect the dole, the post office closes at half 5, an hour and a half after the SW office. But not early enough to get to the SW office. And I don't know the person I was talking to in the SW office, just someone who answered the phone when i managed to get through to someone. I approached my bank for an overdraft they said they could give me an overdraft of 100 euro. That will REALLY pay the bills feed me and pay for my transport for a week. I sent a letter last week notifying the SW that I have gotten employment I asked them to contact me and have received nothing back from them. The responses some people are giving me and smart ass comments are making me consider keeping the money, why not, free thousand euro, sure why not I need it more than a lot of people.

Thats ridiculous IMO. What will you do if people really offend you here, open an offshore bank account? Being irritated is no grounds to commit fraud. With the state that the country is in this type of fraud really irks me.

You do have another source of income now though. You have a job, you will get paid an amount agreed with your new employer at a time and date agreed with them, you agreed that with them by taking the job.

Ask the new employer for some money if your really desperate and they may be able to help you out. Regardless of what the new employer says though do not steal money from the SW.

yes they do
had the same in 2008
i started work and get paid at the enf of the month
i told sw about my situation, i needed money for food,diesel and to pay my bills
they paid me another 5 weeks
had to pay it back in the next 2 months

and in some cases u can apply for back to work allowance
and u dont have to pay back that allowance

JSA/JSB is to keep you going once you are actively seeking and available for work. If you have a job (whether you've been paid yet or not) you don't qualify and you're commiting a crime.

If your new employer is above board, then they'll have you on the books. This means that your start date will eventually find it's way through the computer systems of Revenue and Welfare and someone will someday turn up at your door looking for an explanation.

If you receive the dole after you start work, MAKE SURE that you give back every penny at the earliest opportunity

yes they do

As long as the OP has cleared it with the welfare office and will pay the money back, he's not committing any crime.
