Toyota Avensis 2.0td, how good is it?.

My brother recently went to Australia and kindly gave me his 99 Avensis TD (not the D4D). It is very fresh, only 103000 on the clock and it has a full service history. How good is the Avensis TD 1, Is it economical. 2, Any common gremlins/faults to look out for. There seems to be very little on the net about the Avensis td. I would appreciate if anyone who either owned/owns one or is familiar with the td Avensis could give me some feedback. I have to decide whether to hold on to the car I already have (a 2000 Fiat Bravo) or sell it.

Taxi drivers are loyal to the car so I think that will tell you a lot about it first off.

very few issues with them. have heard or the odd cooling problem, but certainly a lot more straightforward than the newer D-4D. essentially the same as the old Carina E engine, it's indirect injection, old school simplicity.

Give me a shout if you're selling it.

Thanks for the response lads, taxi drivers are always on the ball. How is it on juice? what sort of mpg should I expect?.

About 50mpg on a long journey would be realistic. I'm sure 10 years has taken its toll on the mpg.

we have had ours for a while get 56 miles to the gallon on a long run its a 2002 model the one we have. The only problem we had with ours is the fuel gauge not being accurate

The D-4D engine is a good bit lighter on fuel, it's also a lot nippier (20bhp and a good few more torques extra) the old 2.0 TD engine is a good bit smoother than the D-4D though.

(Avensis engine change over from TD to D-4D happened in mid 2000)

It's hard to find a clean example with a full service history and knowledge of how it was looked after these days, don't look a gift horse in the mouth, snap your brother's hand off for it or someone else will.

The Avensis is worth way more than it is worth (if you catch my drift) - some people here just seem to lust after them! Sell it double quick and cash in. I'll betya either a farmer or a taximan will buy it

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will hang on to it and get rid of the Fiat Bravo. I was lucky enough with the Bravo, it never really gave me much trouble.

Problem is the Bravo is next to worthless. It'd be more a case of giving it away.

I know a taximan who had an Avensis 2.0td. It was utterly reliable, but he still hated it. Said it was dog slow and a pig to drive.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't that engine (the TD just before the D-4D) a Peugeot lump? I think it was (before the Hdi engine was released).
OP -Those engines were great by the way.

Nope. the Corolla (1997-2002 shape) got the normally aspirated 1.9d PSA unit for a time while the D-4D engine started production . It had previously been fitted with the 2.0 normally aspirated unit which saw service in the Carina E and 1992 shape Corolla.

So the 97-02 Corolla had the 2.0, 1.9 and the 2.0 D-4D engine. I don't think that shape Corolla D-4D was actually offered in Ireland, but I've seen them abroad.

Have a 2C engine here too, in a Corona, makes for a ''relaxing drive''

I have one and i'v nothing bad to say, its a brilliant car, bullet proof engine, you won't be disappointed, its the best car of it's era! even if i won the lotto i'd still keep it!
