Well for starters, lots of drink. Dublin is the most expensive of the lot so you mightn't be able to get pissed on the €150 or whatever you bring out with you. Whereas the rest are cheap (Belfast and Newry in particular as they are in Northern Ireland).

... and just general chaos, jumping around the dancefloor, lifting the gf up and fireing her over to the far side of the floor. :D If out with the lads maybe just moshing, and other stuff. Maybe the odd arm wrestle for the craic. None of that is accepted in any of the places in Dublin.

Sure you could throw in a bit of midget throwing, bare fist fighting and whatever you like.

I feel you just have a general dislike for Dublin. I personally would rank Dublin as the best night out if you are from outside Dublin. As a Dub, I would go for Galway and Kilkenny. As for all you great craic, arm wrestling, throwing the GF across the dance floor, moshing. I have not been in a pub/club anywhere in Ireland that allows that, it will always lead to trouble even though you may not have intended it too. On one of your earlier posts you said Dubs were moving up to your part of the world, that was for economic reasons not for the love of your area.

This weekend I will see the Buzzcocks and Fleetwood Mac in Dublin. You could never do that in any of the other "Cities".

So, Dublin, because you can get a variety of things to do which you cannot in Galway (knitted jumper night out), Cork (toasted special night out), Limerick (mind your back night out).

LOL - who is out to get you in Limerick??? have you been out there anytime?

BTW you can keep your 'Fleetwood Mac'. I'm going to Peter Green in Dolan's this Sunday night.

As I've already said, its the reason why alot of Dubs are living elsewhere these days. Most of them are looking to live a little.

The reason Dubliners are buying in Cavan is because you can pick up houses for half nothing! They are living there, commuting and making the best of it. Believe me, if they could afford houses in Dublin they would be buying them.

Whoever is telling you they are buying houses in Cavan and driving up and down to one of the most vibrant cities in Europe everyday cause the craic is good in Cavan is having you on.

Anyway, €6.50 a pint? Coppers? Minimal fun? Maximum boringness? You don't really know the city I'm afraid, you are going to the wrooooooong places.

Again!! We won't agree on this, a good night out for you sounds like a drunken, boisterous, farce to be honest... not my scene.

Maybe I can, but I'm just not into those things.

Don't dislike Dublin, its just a city where people live and work. Nothing more nothing less. That is all I see it as. I have many friends from Dublin all of whom get out of it whenever they can and share the same opinion as I do. If they want to let their hair down at the weekend, the only thing for them to do is head elsewhere. That is my opinion and it is their opinion also.

Also, I've just said that there is a time and a place for moshing. It is something I enjoy doing in small amounts. I was asked what I enjoy doing and I have answered it. It is acceptable in plenty of places, but most certainly not in Dublin. Throwing the girlfriend across the dancefloor dancing is accepted everywhere except Dublin in my experience. Arm wrestling is accepted in every pub on every stag night I've been on, yes you've guessed it, apart from Dublin.

I know plenty of Dubs that live here just to be out of the city. I work with two of them. Nothing to do with money in either case. There are also lots of Dubs that have holiday homes up here so that they can get away for the weekend. But thats just getting away from the point, we are on about cities here. Belfast is head and shoulders above the rest.

It's so much more than a city where people live and work Porn, you really are showing your ignorance of the city and the way it works.

The people who in your words "get out whenever they can" are the ones that never get to know the city, what it has to offer, and the fun that can be had in the city. They don't become part of a community, they don't even know their neighbours, they come and go, they don't socialise and they head off every Friday and arrive back every Monday. Then, they have the cheek to claim the city is not nice?

If I lived in a place that I just work and sleep in, I wouldn't like it. But I live, love, work, socialise, breath, enjoy and am part of where I live, I spend time on the water, in the parks, museums, galleries, pubs, restaurants, clubs... I like walking the streets, I like the people, I know the people.

You don't. I don't think you ever will.

That might be part of it, but most of them come down for the lifestyle and alot of them work here or have started up businesses here as far as I can see. The ones I know already owned one or more houses in Dublin and just sold up. The ones that do commute down, only do so for work.

I know the Dublin well enough to know that I won't be out in it again unless I have to.

dublin is a decent town but lets not get ahead of ourselves, one of the most vibrant cities in europe?? this the same europe that has the likes of amsterdam, berlin, london, barcelona, madrid, budapest, prague, paris.... even smaller towns like bergen, blackpool, edinburgh are more vibrant than dublin on a weekday night, you can walk between south circular road through grafton street to o'connell street at 12am on a weekday night and you will meet a handful of people

I know Dublin well enough to know what its about and I have been out with my gf many times up there when she was at uni. I just don't like going out in it. As far as I am concerned there are better cities to go to as I've experienced far better cities on this island. That is something you don't understand because you are from Dublin and you like to see it as the only place to be in Ireland. Fact is, it isn't.

The people I know that have lived in Dublin have plenty of friends from Dublin that they invite up every weekend to other parts of Ireland for nights out. These are the people that I am talking about. They have lived in Dublin all of their lives and have friends in Dublin and here in Cavan. These are the same ones that don't like Dublin. Their words, not mine.

I know just as much about going out in Dublin, if not more about going out in Dublin than I know about going out in Belfast, Galway, Newry etc. Yet I've always had fun in the latter cities, Dublin just bored me.

Most definitely, ask any tourist from any of the cities you have mentioned. Don't forget, when you are visiting any of these cities you yourself are a tourist.

You are making assumptions Porn, I spent the weekend in Sligo and Mayo, four weeks ago I was partying in kota kinabalu. Next weekend I will be in Athlone, and in three weeks Cork... Believe me, I get around!

The poll has shown that people here don't go clubbing around the country. Northern Ireland has better clubs than Dublin. I've lived in Dublin all my life and I like it, but its nightlife is pretty poor. Go over to one of the big cities in the UK for a weekend to see what real clubbing is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,125 ✭✭✭lightening

Ah yeah, but then someone will say that that's crap, check out the underground club scene in Paris and it goes on and on!!

Mind you, I have had some fun in Kelly's in Portrush...

Dublin - more places = more choices, simple really

been to galway 2 times and really liked it.

Cork is decent but i hate the place. Limerick is very small and can be quite during the week with no students about.

aint been to that many of the other towns mentioned here bar 4 or 5 and that was only once

Galway is the best place for a night out. Everywhere is within walking distance and there are lots of different types of pubs and clubs for nights out depending on your taste.

i went out in Belfast once and everywhere closed at 1am, except clubs that stay open but don't serve alcohol, pretty lame no?
Was over in london the last 5 days, my friend lives in Bayswater and on thursday we couldn't find anywhere to have a drink after 11pm ffs!
Dublin has to be the best in Ireland, it has the most people, most diversity, and most choice.

I would have to say that Galway will always get thumbs up from me for a good night out. I have drank in many other towns around the country but Galway is always the place I would most feel at ease in. It has a unique vibe around it. For example the people, music and atmosphere almost seems to change once you cross the river from the west side of the city where you will find good pubs like the Roisin Dubh, the Crane bar, The blue note etc..compared to the Eat side of the city which is mainly populated with the Night clubs but there still are some good pubs here too like Busker Browns, The front door and McSwiggans.
