Where the hell is it coming from? Yesterday I had 3,000+ spam e-mails  Outlook caught most of them but bloody hell, what have I done to deserve this! In the past week my spam e-mail has gone through the roof to the point where I had to stop checking mail on my iphone and my webmail in work as they were both unable to cope with the huge volume. I use AVG 8.5 and scan every day but it only finds a few tracking cookies. How can I deal with this?

    Just delete 'em.

You must've opened/responded to one of them, which added you to the list of confirmed existing adresses.

Eventually, if you ignore the buggers, they'll go away.

Google "email filtering service" if you have your own domain and pick one of the Irish services available. They can easily solve this problem for pennies. It's not something you should have to put up with in this day and age.

Nobody has asked the most important question, what is your email domain? Gmail, Hotmail, Eircom, IOL etc.

or a friend's account could have been hacked... or a site you frequent could have been hacked... hell of a lot of different reason's for it.

OP, i know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but generally I think it's advisable to stop using an account like that. The more you use an account the more likely it is to be compromised either through spamlists, or contacts being hacked. And once you're on a spamlist there's no going back.

If that's too extreme though, then I'd second the gmail filtering recommendation. It tends to nuke 99.99% of all spam in my experience.

In the long term, segregation is key to avoiding spam. It's generally advisable to have different accounts for different purposes. For example the account you use to sign up for forums and sites like this should never handle emails that contain personal data like addresses, purchases receipts etc. It's mainly the online signing up that results in spam anyway, so keep that separate from your other emails and you should be grand from a security point of view.

You can set up rules to filter them straight to the Trash or Junk folder.
