    Hi all,

Was on wikipedia the other day looking up the drinking ages in various countries, and stumbled across a claim that "at the age of 14, one may consume alcohol legally in private".

Any idea as to whether this is true?
    :pac:

Apparently so... Intoxicating Liquor Act 1988 says anyone under 18 can drink in a private residence. Actually there's no mention of it being illegal for under 14's. Not only that under the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2003 it's not illegal to buy or get drink for an under 18 for consumption in private if the mammy oks it.
Offences by persons under the age of 18 years.
33.—(1) A person under the age of 18 years shall not—
    ( a ) purchase intoxicating liquor,
( b ) consume intoxicating liquor in any place other than a private residence in which he is present either as of right or by permission, or
( c ) represent himself for the purpose of obtaining, or being permitted to consume, intoxicating liquor, to be over the age of 18 years.
    (2) A person who contravenes subsection (1) of this section shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £50.
    (2) It shall not be unlawful for a person (other than the holder of a licence of licensed premises) to purchase or deliver intoxicating liquor for consumption by a person under the age of 18 years in a private residence with the explicit consent of that person's parent or guardian.

In germany I think you can drink beer at 16 and liqour at 18.

Personally i think it should be restricted as much as possible here. Us Irish just dont know how to drink properly.

Countries that restrict alcohol always have youths with warped views of alcohol consumption i.e. US, Ireland and UK.
