My rent alone is more than 10 euro a day.

I won't tell you what mine is...the only good thing is I get the apt to myself 3wks of every mth and its within walking distance to work so there's no buses or dart fares to pay.

OP seems like you're spending lots on stuff you don't need. Money on car tax every month? That's nuts and and expensive way of doing it. Why do you need a car if you're going home at the weekends on the train? And why are you living in the most expensive region of the city? And that crap about birthday presents. What are you doing, buying people iPods?

I suggest you give us a list of your expenditure. I suspect you're spending lots just to pretend you still have plenty of money.

Bingo. You have a car you don't need and are paying ridiculous amounts for rent. That's stupid, frankly. Just as I suspected, you're making yourself poor by not accepting reality. You're taking the piss.

    €10 a day full stop.

Ok. Someone else seemed to think it was the other. I hope your circumstances improve soon so, coz that's not a whole lot to get by on.

Oh not this again. They also have a lower cost of living. You cannot compare the two countries... and people actually thanked you for this post?

In college I lived on about 25 euro a week. I didn't eat crap koka noodles either.

You just have to shop around.

    Car tax - every 3mths.
Birthdays - I can't exactly ignore my mother's next week. I hear your point thou.
    Rent - 600
    Loan - 200
Pension - I'd prefer not to say
    Mobile - 20
    Internet - 30
    Transport - 100-150

    I earn less that 2k.

I know you're going to pounce on the rent part but I'm over 30 and slumping it with strangers isn't my thing anymore. I've been there done that over the years. I also like the fact that I'm near work so I can walk in and out every day which saves on transport.

Do you know where I live down the country? Cause if you did, you'd see why I need my car. I live in this city during the week for work, come the weekend I have to get out.

I might be missing something here - is it €10 a day full stop, or €10 just on food alone?

FFS sake OP  your post has been misleading to say the least. The fact you've said "pension-i'd prefer not to say" either means you havent a clue or you're a public servant who pays it compulsorily and...still hasnt a clue.I posted my budget earlier in a different forum but i hope i sounded a bit more money-savvy than you did. A tenner a day ..at 30+..unless you're talking about food alone is just ridiculous.

I do know what it is...€107

I'm trying to survive on €10 a day for the month of October. I mentioned that in my opening post (1 to be exact).

I posted this thread to get opinions from people, I did not post this to get disrespected.

Yup. 300 a month for food and incidentals is plenty unless you're shopping for clothes and shoes every month or something stupid. Utterly misleading is right. You just need to learn that spending half your surplus money in The Body Shop and most of the rest on comfy socks is not the best way to go.

How about saving €10 a day to a savings account. 3650 a year

    edit:
noted from above post I missed. You're within walking distance to work. May I suggest you get a bike? Sell your car, buy a bike (around 100-400 euro) but in 2 months it will have paid itself off. Also the benefits of fitness, freedom from parking etc..

Is there any negotiation on the rent?
In terms of the mobile. Meteor are doing some deal where they give you 20e a month also I think 3 do 10euro top up and give you 10.
I know you won't like this but any way to lower that loan repayment? I'm sure they can re-arrange the terms to even reduce it to 180 a month?
I'm living on v. little too but am living with the parents so that reduces costs a little.

    Best of luck op

In your opening post this is what you mentioned
there's either birthdays, bills or car tax to be paid.

In my "budget" birthdays arent added to my list of essentials.

Pretty much living off cheese sandwiches and pot noodles (€1 each this week in the campus shop), do this and you're pretty much sorted, could probably get by fairly easily on a fiver a day in terms of food + milk.

Problem is of course that I seem to be going through deoderant, shower gel, shampoo, toilet roll and stuff like that at roughly the same rate, so they'll probably end up running out around the same time.

POT NOODLE 1 Euro..You know lidl is 35 cent and much better! Obviously you're in first year.
I don't know my exact breakdown but I'm prety sure I get by for 7 days on about 30-40 Euro and eat well...in fact I usually never go hungry

Breakfast Tea/Toast...1 Euro for a loaf per week.
College for lunch : 2.50 Standard buffet (+ Take home the free bread)
    Evening meals for 7 days

Mince: 1.5 KG 7.00 :Burgers, spaghetti bolognese
    Pasta (large bag) 2.50 :
    Cheese 2:00:
    Pasta sauce x 2 2.00 : carbonara + bolognese
    noodles x 5 1.75

Some of the above will last two weeks so I can buy potatoes one week and pasta the next so usually I have varity every evening...Whatever else I have left over I can spend on other things I might need from time to time such as oil, ketchup.

Like someone posted before you if you want to be smart shop for a week and plan things out.

This is AH, not Christianity. You stated that you had 300 a month to live on for food and incidentals, yet you claimed that this level of deprivation gave you migranes. If you shopped sensibly, moved somewhere cheaper and renegotiated your loan you'd have no problem on 300 a month. Therefore you're simply not managing your money efficiently.

Migraines on €300 a month... what next? A thread on being forced to buy imitation caviar?

My car tax came out this month and my mother's birthday is also this month.

Taxing my car and my Mom's b/day are essential things to me for the month of October.

I'm not explaining this any more to you deary.

Oh wise one, what does AH mean? Tell me quick, I'm bursting to know..

Moving somewhere cheaper is something I'm going to look into. Planning my food shopping and cooking requires more input also. I think I'd leave the loan as it is.

You were doing well there Connie til your last line :( All I wanted was a bit of advice, not abuse.

Caviar is good, ain't it? Or are you that priviledged my dear? I'll treat you some time perhaps...

If you dont explain what your income and expenses are how are we meant to understand what you're exactly doing with "€10"/day. I did the same thing..but in a differnent forum and laid out my income and expenditure. In AH, you'll get teenagers, students and homeowners all in the same bag.Im in the last category so you'll get a very different opinion!

AH is After Hours, as in the forum you are now posting in.

I think it's a bit unfair of you to come here "looking for opinions" and then to act as if everyone is disrespecting you. What exactly do you expect when you are posting as if you are somehow better than anyone else? Calling anniehoo "deary" etc. You are acting extremely condescending. The last line of your post is a tad ironic, don't you think, considering you have no money? I think he'll be the one treating you! Deary.

AH is a forum where jokes will be made btw, no one was setting out to belittle you.

Annie, this is my 3rd thread to post on this website and to be honest I wasn't expecting the reaction I got from you and Confab. I can defo see your points thou. You probably think what I'm worrying about is nothing but I posted here cause I'm finding it hard to adapt to a different lifestyle. I wanted to hear people's ideas and experiences.

Nothing wrong with this budge, bar one thing. Your rent. I am looking for places now and we are getting some pretty good deals. The place we live in now is 1100 a month, but so was everything when we started looking.

There are some places you could live for about 400 a month. Go to daft.ie and see what you think?

I know slumping it with strangers isn't everyones dream, I love my own space too, but think of the money, hard times means hard times. You know?

I am trying to talk the girlfriend into sharing so we can save a lot of much needed cash, but "I never shared and I don't want to" crap keeps getting said to me.

Lads, give her a break in all fairness... the question is "Could you live on €10 a day".

    Thank-you!

I defo think I'm gonna have to move out. In the boom times I was paying €400 so might fish around for that again. Ideally I want somewhere that I can walk to work but I doubt that'll happen for that price.

One of my friends recently moved into with his g/friend in Malahide. They were hoping for something closer to town but they found it far too costly. Now they've got a fab apartment with great views and a 20-30min train journey. I'm sure I'd get €400 out that far.

Well I did a search there for malahide and you won't get anything for less than 750. Even at that the houses are not great.

You would probably have to share. Saying this, it's only a year, and if you do share make sure your contract is for the room not the house. If somebody moves out you could be screwed. There are plenty of people who are in the same boat and would want to share. You know? I just think about the money, comforts will come soon enough. Do you drive around in dublin? What time do you start work at? You could move further away and commute? Like 30 - 40 mins away? You work in Malahide I take it?

I was looking just now myself. I work on Baggot St. Where I am at the mo is ridiculously handy for that. My landlord is out of the country for 2/3 weeks of each month so I've the place to myself a lot of the time which is kinda cool. However, it's not helping my bank a/c in any way. Wherever I move to I will defo be sharing. I lived for 7yrs on the northside before as I worked in the IFSC so that was convenient with Connolly Station next door. This time around, I made the decision to try renting on the southside, again for work. In in Grand Canal Dock at the mo. Before I moved back to Dublin to live, I commuted for 6wks from the midlands. It was fine but worked out at €400 in total to commute every day.

I know the northside areas quite well but wouldn't be too familar with the southside. I might send a thread tomorrow about that.
