;62496051]First of all, I don't think 'insincere sorrow' is on the same level as stupid jokes. It might be annoying for you, but it's far less disrespectful to the man who died and less upsetting for family or friends who may be reading. Secondly, perhaps people are genuinely sad about it? And how do you know those people didn't know him or know his family? Ireland is a very, very small place.
i'm afraid i can't agree with this ivory tower-like sneer at the common folk who are emotive about the death of a public figure. i'm not sad this guy is dead as i did not know him and his music did not not reasonate with me but for other people it clearly does and for some he was a big influence in their formartive years so it is perfectly understandable that they would be sad at his passing. i don't seen that as in sincere and sinister or an indication of some sort of psychological weakness on their part.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I was of course not including those who knew him, nor those who genuinely feel a pang of sadness. I'm not so cynical as to believe all the sentiment expressed here is insincere. The death of a figure in popular culture can be quite affecting if that person made a mark on a particular generation. I was genuinely saddened in that context when Michael Jackson died. And there is obviously nothing wrong with expressing the view that this is a terrible, senseless tragedy and waste of a young life (I did so myself). What I'm referring to though is the self indulgent, self righteous high horse-mounting as a backlash against anything that's civil and reasonable but not simply "RIP".

As for the tiresome "jokes", getting outraged at them is exactly what those posting them are looking for...

I'm very sorry to hear about Stephen.
He was my favourite boyzone member and I do recall having a slight crush on him at the age of 13. I don't know what happened, but I do wish his family well and hope they get through this difficult time.
Rest in peace Stephen.

Lets hope there's no cynical attempt to cash in on this with a crass Christmas song

Thse candles are pathetic.

And how completely bizarro and not at all made up that 5 out of 8 of the testimonials are from ninnies who mention how their candles arrived in "perfect condition"
What sort of dimwits do the candle people think their customers are?
Actually, don't answer that, to buy something as God awful as that in the first place, you'd have to be a bit of a dodo.

Just seeing these reports from Sky of a third man who apparently found him originally.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Showbiz-News/Stephen-Gately-Post-Mortem-Bulgarian-Georgi-Dochev-Tells-Of-Shock-At-Boyzone-Stars-Death/Article/200910215404664?lpos=Showbiz_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15404664_Stephen_Gately_Post-Mortem%3A_Bulgarian_Georgi_Dochev_Tells_Of_Shock_At_Boyzone_Stars_Death

The suggestion seems to be: they met this guy at the club they were at, they came back to their apartment, they MAYBE had another drink or two, and then they went to sleep.

What's puzzling me is the sleeping arrangements: why was Gately on the couch? Were they all in the sitting room?

I don't mean to be sensationalist, but usually when someone is brought home like this, it's with more in mind than a nightcap. I have an awful feeling that they brought him home more at the request of Gately's husband, and that Gately was left on his own in the sitting room while the other two shared a different room. Maybe that's just my cynicism speaking.

Well Newstalk are reporting that he died of a pulmonary oedema. I'm no doctor but as far as I know, that's not usually as a result of over drinking?

Cause it's impossible to move a drunk man? If my boyfriend comes home after a hard nights drinking and passes out on the couch I leave him there. I know from experience he will not be moved!

Was this man not known to both Stephen and his partner?

Don't believe everything you hear or read.

He was a friend of theirs, known to both of them.
What's most likely is that they had an arrangement whereby whoever come home late after partying got to sleep on the couch, so as not to wake the other.

Either that or he got up in the middle of the night feeling unwell, to go to the toilet or get a drink but then had to sit down and collapsed.

pulmonary oedema is a build up of fluid in the Lungs, can be caused by heart failure.

Don't believe everything you hear or read.

If he was a friend that casts a different colour on things. Reports I'd read hadn't said that. I was just surmising...I am a cynical old bastard :)

Anyway, kind of shocking someone of his age can die of something like that just like that. Scary. They say there was no link to drink or drugs, so it was just a natural occurence. Sudden deaths in young people like this always freak me out.

I'm glad to hear that Stephen's partner and family can now take him home. I'm still shocked at his premature death. I was never a huge fan of boyzone but I had huge admiration for the courage Stephen showed in 1999 by coming out. It can only have been difficult as at that time Irish society was a very different place.

Ireland has lost a truly courageous person and Stephen's family can only be proud of the strong character he was.

It wasn't much different to be fair

Sure Will & Grace was on TV for a year before he came out.. not like it was a totally unheard of thing by the Irish people

He was my Boyzone crush! :o God, I must have been 9/10 when they were belting out songs. Sad to think that anyone so young can just die like that. I really hope his family and friends are doing okay, it's a horrible time for all of them.

Yeah, but there is a big difference between USA and little auld catholic ireland! Not saying that the country was in the dark ages back then, but it certantly wasnt as acceptable to be gay here as it was over state side...

I bet there are still people very afraid to come out in small town Ireland. We haven't come as far as we like to tell ourselves we have.
