Can a viruses infect other part of your computer?

I assume that the viruses is only infecting the Hard drive and once you format your hard drive (if it is that drastic) you remove the virus, malware and other forms of infection. Can anyone confirm this?

For the most part yes, but there have been recorded incidents of viruses that infect Graphics cards, but these are very rare.
