Device to play xvids on tvs

I am looking to get a hard drive or something similar that will allow me to load media be it movies, songs/videos onto it that I can then plug into the tv and access the index etcetera and play the items direct from this to the HD TV via the USB connection. I did see one once that did this and it also had a small 2-3in screen on it as well for when on the go.
