Samsung NC 10 Yes or No

Is the NC 10 still the netbook of choice for the cost range. I need one for occasional use. When I cant get to my office, I have access to an office with wifi which allows me onto the corporate network. I will be using it to for MS Office a couple of hours a day, also connecting into citrix infrastructure. Will this be comfortable and powerfull enogh for this type of work.

I was thinking of reccomedniig this for a nephew going back to college, doing journalism. Would this be suitable for this, there will be a lot of typing going on !

Yes, yes and yes. Have one, love it to bits. Fine piece of engineering and you won't regret it.

I was about to start a very similar thread, wold be using it for office, web browsing, and general media usage.

All I'm hearing is good stuff, are there any negative reports on it.

I guess, my speakers stopped working after about 5 months of use but it was sent to the UK and back in 5 days, fixed for free.

The trackpad on them isn't great, it's a bit on the small side, i can't think of anything other than that though. My Dad has one for around the house and he loves it, it never seems to run out of battery.

I have one two and there an excellent machine and take a fair bit of abuse as well

Dropped mine in a back pack and anything else you'd be talking new screen at least not a bother on this little puppy

That would be my only gripe - track pad is small and sits flush so my finger runs off the edge regularly.

The quoted battery life is 6 hours, but I bought one @ the weekend and it seems to be more like 2 - 2.5 hours ?

Other than that, VERY neat bit of kit and currently only €299 in Argos!

Don't forget for a small sum more the NC 10 has been outdated several times now, mostly in only slight variations, but you have a choice of the N110, N120 and recently launched N130 and N140...worth checking out in case some other hardware bugs have been worked out of the NC10's system. Got the N140 myself, nice little machine, great battery!

The Argos one only has half the battery life of the normal one, hence their price difference.

Not sure what you mean by 'outdated'? Havent spotted or heard about any hardware bugs and the resolution of the NC10 is better than some of the replacements.

It's definitely worth looking at the new Samsung n140. Almost identical specs with some improvements (e.g. 802.11n support) and doesn't cost that much more.

Edit: Plus 10 hour battery life supposedly!

2Gb ram and is noticably faster than Vista.
Vista is WinME reloaded...a pile of crap.
Upgrade from XP to Windows 7 do not bother with Vista.

The Dell Mini 10v is another to consider, about 330 yo-yos with the 6 cell battery and 8 hours battery life

And yes upgrade from XP when you get one - either to a Linux distro of your choice or to windows 7 (btw are they still giving that away for free?)

I have the 1005ha-p with 10.5h battery life and all that. Love it and it's screen resolution, I'd argue it's better value than the Samsung NC10 anyday.

I get 7 or 8 hours out of my nc 10 you need to mess around with battery manager still IMO best netbook out there

Hi all,
After web-wandering, and video-watching and so on, I just purchased a N140 online instead of NC10. The kboard is a bit bigger and the touchpad seems to be better.
Delivery date estimated next week. I can't wait now!

Where did you puchase it from?, how much? thinking about getting the same, or is it worth the wait windows 7 be installed next month?? what about a nvidia ion capable machine?

Outdated simply means the company making it have made newer, "better" models (their viewpoint obviously) and the NC10 has dropped in price accordingly...outdated, not crap or redundant, just outdated.

I didn't mean dramatic hardware bugs that would have been made public, I mean that the manufacturing process is likely to identify and improve on weaknesses in such small factor technology as they continue development.

Also, I'm pretty sure every model I mentioned including the NC10 has a native resolution of 1024*600, so not sure which "replacement" has worse? In fact the NC20 is better because of a bigger screen size allowing 1240*800

Hi Chris,
I got it at Amazon.co.uk, as I used a voucher I received from a friend, but I checked on Elara.ie, and the final price for the N140 is the same.
I don't really care about windows, as I am going to install linux on it. I have a Macbook at home, but I need something light to carry around.

Hi, I have the NC10 and have had since it came out. It's my only pc and gets a LOT of use. So far absolutely no issues. It even plays games like World of Warcraft! I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 2gb and probably upgrade to Windows 7 too but thats just me fiddling. Great battery life and wouldn't swap for a normal laptop now, use my girlfriends Toshiba and hate it!

I have NC10 for only a week so not much use with me with regard to feedback. So far it's great. All I want to add is that I was specifically looking for a model with built-in 3G as I needed it for mobile broadband. Now using in the office with Three EUR9.99 Mobile addon and feeling quite happy. I did update memory to 2Gig but noticed no difference, probably, because I don't play heavy games or use heavy apps, it's mainly just for the Internet.

Bought a N140 two weeks ago and I have nothing but praise for the little beast.

I only had three complaints about it out-of-the-box:
- Windows XP is a pretty dated OS and not really suited to small screens
- 1 GB of RAM is pretty stingy, this is down to Microsoft requiring manufacturers to supply Vista with machines with 2 gig of RAM or more (which costs more)
- No option for SSD drive

It's a really well put together machine, I opened it up to replace the drive and had a good look at all the internals. There's a header for another PCI-e card inside, pity they didn't include a connector on the board. Apparently in Poland they ship with WiFi and 3G modems. The wifi card is a mini-pcie (half size) which supports 802.11n. The layout has changed a bit (for the better) from the NC10. Battery has been upgraded to 5900mah and samsung declare 11h battery life!

I put windows7 on it, 2 gigs of ram and 32gb SSD drive. As a system for office work (word, excel etc) and internet, it's more responsive than my 17" dell beast.

I don't charge the battery to full, to give it a longer lifecycle it stops charging at 80%. I haven't turned off any of the win7 effects, I really like the look&feel of the aero desktop. With all this I get 5-6 hours of battery life out of a 80% charge. More than enough for my needs. The 11h battery life must be only attainable on XP with everything toned down a light usage with a full charge.

There's no reason to buy a NC10 now, unless you're getting it really really cheap (I'm thinking under 200 euro).
