lyx and bibtex styles

I need to use citations like this: (Smith 2000) (Smith and Jones 2000) (Smith et al. 2000) according to Smith (2000) But I seem to be doing something wrong. I can't seem to find a predefined style that does it this way (even excluding the last one). I tried generating my own using makebst, but that turned out wrong also.…

The only way I am getting it to work is by setting the citation format for every indivdual citation. Clearly this is not an optimal solution.

Help?

Pretty sure you can only cite numerically, in standard latex anyway.

So you could have
Smith et al. \cite{refkey} show....
which would yield
Smith et al. [1] show....

And then your bibliography would be indexed by numbers.

I'm open to correction though!

Looks like it's the harvard package that you're after:

The other package to try is Natbib, very flexible if you can learn how to use it.

As the other posters said the Natbib package is the way of doing author year referencing for the most part in Latex.
Nearly all the Tex installers have Natbib as part of the base install so you should already have it.

You need to enable natbib in each document that you use in Lyx, you do this in the document setting. Document > Settings...
In the Bibliography section you select natbib as the citation style and author-year as the natbib style.

At the point where you want to insert your bibliography then go Insert > List / TOC >BibTex Bibliography...

You then need to add your citation database and select your style. I've selected Elsevier's Havard style in the image, you can select from installed styles in the list or browse for other bst files.

When you add your citation, you'll then get an option of what style you want in the drop down box.
