My dog accepts the occasional cat for a meal...

People who get a cat because they want a low maintenance pet are doing themselves and the cat a disservice.

Dogs give 110% no matter how badly they are treated. They have infinite forgiveness because they have a pack animal mentality. Cats do not have a pack animal mentality, however they do thoroughly enjoy company and companionship, both from humans and other animals. Anyone who has ever lived with a multi-cat household that was properly interacted with will know just how social cats are.

Cats give back precisely what you put into them. If you play with them, interact with them, cuddle them, train them and spend time with them, you will get a playful, interactive, cuddly, obedient, social cat.

I find it rather disturbing to see lots of young men who manage to:

    1) Project their emotions onto a cat ("It's an evil bastard" etc)
    2) Go out of their way to injure or attack a cat if they see one
    3) Display a lack of empathy for the pain and fear of another living thing
    4) Combine the above three in a sort of concentrated 'young male testosterone-driven ignorance' bordering on the sociopathic

(This is partly from speaking to a distant family member yesterday. He's 24, and in a day of boredom he caught a number of young wild rabbit kittens. He zipped them into a cushion cover and teased his fox terrier with the cushion cover for an hour, then released the rabbit kittens and allowed the dog to kill them. His excuse was 'rabbits are vermin'. I pointed out that if you want to destroy vermin, you should destroy them quickly and humanely, but the hard-on he likely got while teasing the dog with a cushion cover filled with young animals is probably an indication of a deep psychological problem.)

Seriously, like. Dogs are great, domesticated animals. Cats are also great, domesticated animals. If you're stupid enough to think a cat is cunning, evil, manipulative, or has any other personality trait that requires the intelligence of a human emotion, you're either as thick as two short planks yourself or you're overestimating the cat.

A cat's tiny, fuzzy, peanut brain is no more capable of calculated malice than a tiny, fuzzy peanut itself is capable of calculated malice. Stop mistaking instinct for malicious intent. It's too dumb for words.

Don't get me wrong I like cats and would never downplay their role in peoples lives.

Infact it just shows how great it is that mankind can bond with animals so much that they go on the internet late at night to join in a virtual debate and defend their prefered pet.

Somebody may have mentioned it already, but this thread needs a poll.

I prefer dogs though. Cats are only interested in themselves. Dogs are far more loyal and compassionate.

    That's pretty nasty. :(

Although it's worthwhile pointing out that the dog ended up doing the killing, not your relative.

In my experience everyone who tells me they hate cats has never had a cat!

    I had 2 cats.
One i loved to bits and was very affectionate.. then we found out he was sick (aids actually) n ad been all his life. which was why he was so affectionate. Had to be put down in the end :(

Second one, Sasha, was the polar opposite. Someone said cats give back what you put in-I tried playing with her on countless occasion and she would just sit there and stare at me like I had three heads, or just look and walk away. She mewed at the door until we fed her-then f*ckd off! Every time. Impossible to get any kind of social interaction outta her, no matter how hard you tried.

My third experience with cats is the fact that im pretty sure im allergic to my bfs one-eyes go itchy, red puffy, every time im around her... horrible!

In short, I have had cats but Id have to say I would choose a dog hands down. While cats are still an animal, and id never harm one, id also never keep one as a pet again. Expensive as any pet and you get nothing back.
Have a new dog now and wish id got one years ago!

Excellent post. I really like cats because they can be quite warming and calming and like a good cuddle (we incidentally have a cat named "Cuddles"). Cats are very very playful. Dangle a yo yo or some string in front of a cat and they'll go nuts with it for ages, roll a little ball in front of them and they'll tackle with you and can be just as fun as dogs.

I don't really like dogs. Most things I dislike of them are probably down to "their owners" or trainers or whatever. It's the shitting all over public paths, hyperactivity and tendency to either jump on people or bite them. Oh, and all the barking. Cats having a street fight at night is no fun at all if you're trying to sleep but hearing a dog bark every two seconds when anyone walks past a house does me nut in.

I've always viewed cats as somehow more intelligent and intriguing - but that's probably just me projecting some pseudo-psycho babble :p

I don't think they're cold to strangers though. One Halloween nearly 10 years ago, I saw a little kitten walking around the street obviously lost and scared. I followed it around for about a half hr before petting it and taking it home. Sometimes if you appear threatening to a cat (even "your own") the cat will run away but often if you can make nice with cats as easy if not easier than dogs. I've never understood all these people that get scratched by cats. They'll only swing for you if you're doing something to them they don't like.

Cats rock because they're smart. Dogs and humans, are not.

I had my kitten in a carry case queueing for the Blue Cross vet last week and the amount of people who were like "Oh! Is that a CAT?" and "Eugh, I blody hate cats". They all had dogs. Mean people :(
But it's Sunday afternoon, I have a hangover and JJ is in my lap purring. Feel better already :)

I prefer dogs over cats, but I don't think there is any need for someone to openly say to a cat owner I don't like cats.

    Each to their own.

    The Cat's Diary

    Day 983 of My Captivity

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. B@$ta*ds!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

    :D

I like both cats and dogs. I don't have a dog right now as I live in an apartment and I prefer big dogs that need more space. I do, however, have a cat and she is very friendly, cuddly, and playful. She loves being around people, cuddling with them. She "talks" all the time and follows me everywhere at home. People who don't have cats think it's unusual, but it's not - it's all about how you raise them. If you love them and play with them, they will reciprocate.

I truly don't understand the hatred a lot of people have for cats. Honestly, it comes across as extremely ignorant.

Generally cats just don't warm to me, I am excitable and jumpy and dogs are more responsive to that behaviour. Sitting down, being still and warm are things cats like - which I can't do.

I do like cats, they are mysterious, majestic, graceful etc etc,
but if they don't warm to me instantly I'll give up trying because I don't have the patience.

When I was visiting my brother his girlfriends cat absolutely hated me!, if she was licking herself on the stairs and I came bounding down she would hiss and scrape at me.

I love my dog though http://www.flickr.com/photos/7585448@N03/3836049139/in/set-72157622083534418/
