Car for 6/7000

I'm in the market for a car costing 6 or 7 grand at most.
I'd be able to pay cash and was looking at the likes of Astra/Focus?
Saw a Chevrolet Lacetti today for fairly cheap but a quick search on internet forums wasn't too complimentary!
Bascially I'd be hoping for a 05/06 with at most 50,000 miles.
What type of car should I be looking at? What makes/models should I discount?
Very hard to narrow the search down in that type of range!

Do you want a family car, sports car/weekend car or something small and nippy or what?

something in the astra/focus type range. I'm a fairly boring oldish fart, nothing too sporty. Have no kids or anything but at 31 am a bit too old for a souped up honda civic. Not ruling out a souped down honda civic though!

Just so happens I drive a Honda Civic

On that note how about a base model Civic, maybe an S-Sport or an Si, little bit of kick.
Or if you want there's a 'family/business' look Honda, the old shape Accord/Toreno Euro-R or SiR-T for the faint hearted. (Sorry Honda happens to be my strong point)

If you rather it, Try a Zetec Mondeo or Focus, good cars
