And a key part was always running 20 miles at marathon pace, under race conditions, hence they'd run the first 20 of Longford and get picked up at 20 miles when training for Berlin and when she was training for Dublin she ran the half at marathon pace, ran through the finishing chute picked up her medal, threw it in the bin and carried on at that pace for another 7 miles.

Race condition experience is obviously a benefit, entering (and paying) for races your not going to finish or race is certainly a very focused approach. If I didn't get my goal time during the marathon I think I'd be a bit resentful of all the races I missed or simply used as training tools. Does JK pay their entry fees I wonder ?

(would you like your log back now VR ? ;))

hi VR, how are you getting on with hitting your target weight for Berlin? I read on your log that you have reached taper (congrats), do you think you will lose weight between now and race day?

Sorry for late post on my marathon. No access to a laptop lately so have to buy one nxt week. The marathon went well. The aim all along was to go sub 3 and although i thought i would do better i was happy with 2.59.08

Arrived thursday and i love to carb load. Pastas pizza porridge and fruit bread were the call for the first 3 days.

Woke up fri with a sore throat. The fella in the room also had it. We messed up with the air conditioning and keeping windows open etc. I had a cold in my chest sat and if race was ion sat i was a non runner or at best jogging around. Sunday i had a headcold. The lad with me had it in his chest and i knew he was in bother as his eyes were showing it. So i went out at 3 hr pace and just wanted to see howfar i could go.

The garmin aint a great guide for the marathon as i found that if i want to run at 4.15 a km i have to run at 4,13 on hte garmin. Be warned folks.

First 10 km after a slow start i was on the money 42.31.
Second 10km was harder and i went thru in 42.41 which i was 12 seconds behind. I was counting seconds all the way and knew after each km what i was behind. Strangely at halfway i was 12 seconds ahead andi hadnt sped up on the last 1.1 km. So halfway at 1.29.48 i was tired but a 6/10 tired so i knew i could keep going.
Met two girls after halfway. No romance just a powerade, ride shots(jelly versions which are quite nice on the belly) and a bar. I struggled a little till 30km which i went through in 42,40. So i was 23 seconds behind 3 hour schedule. Is it going away from me i was thinking. Is the head cold hurting ?? I didnt know. Mental tortute for the 3 hours.
I knew i was meeting the girls for another powerade at 36 and this got me going till then. I knew the area and it helped. I decided to push a little but not alot as i knew i had trained hard and it would stand to me.
I went through the 40km in a 42.17 which made me 13 seconds and i only had 10 to make up.

2.195 km to go and i can smell it. Do i do a 4 min km and make it up all at once and then have nothing left ?? No was the answer to that and i did a 4.07 km which left me 3 seconds behind. I have it i am thinking. By the time the nxt km was done in 4.05 i could see the line. As i looked at my garmin time i seemed to be well ahead and pushed as much as i could at i sensed i could break 2.59. I couldnt but i ran the last .48 km on my garmin at my 10km pace.

I was thrilled at the finish but the head cold didnt bother me. By finishing so fast could i have pushed earlier ?? I dont know. Thats for another day i suppose. Sub 3 was the aim and i was a safe bet what i did.

Whats nxt i dont know ??? Maybe London but with a negative split in berlin the last two years i might just go back there again. Thanks ot everyone that followed the log but it will be my last entry for a while until i set a new goal.
Only regret of the weekend was going back smoking. Sprawled on the floor after a marathon having a ciggie. What a sight but i suppose i deserved it.

I was lucky but my friend with the cold ran 3.14 aND I WAS EXPECTING HIM TO RUN 2.55. I suppose i was very lucky but it absolutely broke my heart. I wanted the two of us to do it. I have no doubt his day will come.
