The birds and the bees

As a result of having extremely catholic parents, my formal sex education consisted of my mam asking me at 12 "do you know about sex" and me saying "eh.....yeah" as i fled the room more embarrased than i thought possible.

I always wondered (and still do) how other people found out.

For me, when i was 8 the big boys on the road told me. I think they felt sorry for me coz i was going around talking about "sex" and saying stuff that was completely wrong :D.

So how/when did you find out about sex?

Was it your parents, friends, older kids, did you see/hear something you weren't supposed to :D?

I'd be interested in seeing how many boardsies' parents were completley open and honest about it and explained it to them at a very young age.

We had someone come to us in 5th class primary school. Boys and girls separated and when the class was over, I remember the lady telling us not to make fun of each others bits and pieces. :D
    Parents told me nothing.

I was very disappointed when that chat contained no zoological discussion.

Our bioogy teacher gave a group of us 13 year olds an afternoon lesson ....er on sex education .

we left the classroom as confused as we went in

It wasn't till the next day that the penny dropped

The fact that biology teacher was also pregnant at the time didn't register with some of us either

I think I was about 9 when the conversation was doing the rounds of my friends.

I actually tried to have "the talk" with my younger brother a few years ago, In fairness he wasn't embaressed or trying to do a runner or anything but the bits he'd picked up from South park, the Simpsons and his mates was a bit off the bat.

Most kids seem to have a fairly good idea about the "ins and outs" of it by about 10 or 11.

The trick is to always keep learning

I asked my mother how babies were made when I was about 4 and she told me that "the man puts his willy into the woman's vagina". That was it. No big deal. Though for a few years I just figured that he put it in there and then they went asleep or something. It wasn't explained to me graphically or anything.

My older sisters Junior Cert Science book had me filled in on everything by the time I was about 11, I also discovered bertieahern.com around the same time so I was pretty precocious for my age.

Basics off a friend when 9. Bit more filled in by classmate when 12 (teacher was out for the day!) and documentories and the like on BBC2 and Channel 4! :)

I remember asking my mother when I was 6 or so about where did babies come from. She said "You pray to God". What a cop out!

We used to play a game with the really young kids when we where young called "have you got a penis or a vagina", wait, wait it's not as bad as it sounds. Basically ask them them that question and no matter what they say point and laugh saying "ha ha you've got a penis/vagina" then they'll go "no wait I have (opposite)" then we'd laugh again and the child would run home to it's parents crying to ask which one they had.

    Simpler times.

I pieced it together. People my age telling me bits and pieces about it, medical diagrams and booklets. Never quite understood it until one day I was watching a film at about ten years of age, it may well have been a Bond film. There was a scene where Bond and the woman get intimate, which led to a fade-out. "Aaaahhhh....so that's how it goes. Phew."

My mother was a great believer in good clear matter-of-fact information from a young age.

In fact, so strongly did she feel about it that she insisted that my friends were well-briefed as well, which could be both hilarious and mortifying at the same time.

That said, discussions among ourselves tended to be more entertaining, especially after one of the lads "liberated" a couple of mags and a vid from his older brother's store and passed them round! :D

I don't remember, but I remember being about 6, knowing about sex and a fair idea of what was involved and thinking 'I can't wait to have this'
It took me a while to realise I didn't need a partner...

Yeah I thought that for a long while....mainly because I heard "Oh God! Oh God! Oh God! Oh God! Oh God! Oh God"....etc coming from my parent bedroom when I was young.

By the time my parents told me anything I was well informed. Dunno how I found out, I don't really remember a time when I didn't know the basic mechanics of it. For me it was just another piece of biology, like "where does food go when you eat it?" or "what happens when you breathe?".
