Maintenance question

    Hi lads,

I have been following a weights program for about a year until now. I made good gains int he areas I wanted to and since starting have diversified my workout to include a few sports rather than relying on gym work.

I don't really want to lift weights any more, I find I'm not enjoying it any more in comparison to my other workouts. I'm wondering if it matters to the things below whether or not I'm lifting weights or not. I have been lifting up until recently, I am currently taking protein shakes to supplement my diet so I don't lost the muscle mass I do have. Im unsure as to whether or not I need to do maintenance work in the gym or not.

Below is my weekly schedule, in addition to the stuff below I walk a lot, eat pretty well and I don't drink more than two or three times a month. I am a non smoker. 6'2", 95kg.

    Monday: Boxing (1hr)
    Tuesday: Martial arts (2hrs)
    Wednesday: Boxing (1hr) + Grappling/ground work (1hr)
Thursday: Off (I usually do some skipping and shadow work though)
    Friday: Boxing (1hr)
    Saturday: Grappling/ground work (1-2hrs)
Sunday: Off (Definitely no exercise today)

I reckon you will loose the muscle built up, shakes or no. Maybe consider
doing a simpler weights workout for yourself, for maintenance.

it'd be a good idea to do one full body workout per week at least as with that kind of training, you'll lose fat and muscle

Thanks lads. The shakes are an absolute solution to the problem. I mean I'm working my muscles with every session in some way. I like the idea of only lifting weights once a week, It's not that I don't appreciate lifting weights, just want to get away from number and making gains etc, not of interest to me at the moment.

Would you recommend compound exercises or more isolating exercises?

When I think of a total body workout I simply think of deadlifts and squats as being sufficient. Some will disagree no doubt.

It's a lot of legs, back and shoulders stuff that might suit.

So maybe squats and pull-ups, then incline bench and deadlift.
Followed by barbell shoulder-press, dips to finnish.

Alot to do in one day, you'll sleep well afterwards.

Will press ups work instead of benching?

As you mention yourself OP, you'll be hitting your muscles with your other workouts too, so don't worry about losing muscle - it's not as if you're gonna be out running 5-6 times a week and nothing else.

Yeah, the boxing + MA is as good as any interval training I've done, I don't really want to get much smaller but I really don't feel that I need a three day weights routine any more, if anything it just tires muscles that get worked out while training anyway.

Oh yeah. This is probably done anyway during your boxing training. Try elevated push-ups, with your feet on a crate or low bench. This will help more with speed and power when you box.

    Thanks.

I'd like to substitute the maximum amount of weights work possible with bodyweight exercises so I can do them at home rather than go to the gym to do them.
