There was three of them, two were in suits, maybe they met up with a few others after the tests. I suppose they were trying to intimidate the people around them...didn't work, I'd say at least a quarter of the people there were in the RDF, me included, and could tell they were full of it. They just came across as bull****ters to be honest.

Was surprised at the mix of clothing people wore...I wore a shirt and trousers myself, there were a fair few wearing suits which looked grand, but there was one guy "slightly" overdressed. But thats far better than the lads who looked like they'd been dragged through a hedge backwards, the lads with their tracksuit bottoms tucked into their socks...I could hardly believe it to be honest.
There was one "3 piece" individual I remember - looked very snazzy indeed! I was pretty suprised at the "trackie into socks with over-tight t-shirt and ear-ring" guys myself, I mean its not that hard to look neat :0

EDIT: And when the email says to be at the test centre at 08.40, and you don't arrive until 09.15, you might struggle with life in the Defence Forces
Seconded, they were very lucky it didn't start bang-on 9. I'm sure it must have been a broken-down car or bus or something though because they both looked quite stressed!

Sure there was a chap in my round wearing full RDF gear!

A 3 piece was overkill really. Shirt and jeans seemed appropriate.

Good luck to everyone today anyways time will tell eh!

I thought he was hilarious, stripped down to the waistcoat, and was wandering around, pretty much through little groups of people, as if he owned the place! At least he made an effort though!

No, another guy landed in after them. At least he tried to, but the lady from the PAS had already started announcing stuff, so they told him to come back at 1230.

Are you sure he was RDF? Not PDF? 1230 test, right?

Only caught a glimpse of him and I was down the very back and he was up the front. Could've been. There were PDF chaps there alright, maybe I got mixed up.

Good luck to all, results in a week-not a bad turn around at all!

Funny, i was sat close to mr 3 piece. Well as said before, at least he made an effort. I noticed the lads coming in late - was quite surprised they were allowed in.
By the way, there was a pdf guy up top with rank markings i didn't recognise, - air corps?

What did they look like? And what uniform was he wearing?

Also, just in general to everyone posting here, when it comes to the next round it may be an idea to think twice about posting. By that stage there might be enough info to identify you, something which may or may not be a good thing depending on your posting history! Just something to be aware of, you can never be too careful when it comes to such an important competition as this.

Best of luck to everyone here, you all seem to be pretty switched on anyway :D

The chap in question was wearing dpm with two stripes at an angle. Now that I've had a browse it looks like naval service able seaman rank markings.

If it has wings on it it's AC
If it has wings and white horizontal bars, it's AC and you salute it

If it's yellow or red, it's NS
If it has a star and yellow bars, it's NS and you salute it

If it has pips, swords or laurels, it's Army and you salute it.
There's no real simplification for Army OR's :D

    Simple huh??

    Well said Concussion.

A bit of tact people you are after all striving to become Officers. Keep that attitude and God help you if you do make it through the gates.

Well lads, new to posting here, was at the tests yesterday, it was tough going in fairness (well i found it that way anyway), I'd say the maths threw alot of people. The job simulation was very enjoyable. I was talking to a friend of mine who is an officer and I was explaining the scenarios on the paper and he said they were probably compiled from past experience of cadets and junior officers which was good, I really enjoyed that part of the exam. I wouldnt be all that confident about getting through but it was great to be there doing the selection procedure again, got a great buzz out of it. Best of luck to all concerned and for whoever does get it, congratulations, it is an excellent way of life.

I saw this guy aswell and could not for the life of me identify the rank. They were DPM's and a rank slider. The slider had 2 perpendicular bars but they were slanted at 45 degrees. If he was NS wouldn't he wear the NS uniform? If he was AC wouldn't he wear the AC uniform? If he was army.........what the hell is he?

Hope everyone did well anyway! Best of luck on monday!

He was an Able Seaman, probably attached to an Army unit, thats why he was wearing the DPMs. There was also an Air Corps Corporal there.

How long does the competition go on for?

    Best of luck lads

It's closed. The 2009 applicants are undergoing selection at the moment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 611 ✭✭✭Craigsy

No what i meant was how long does it go on for from the test yesterday to the "you got the job" part

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭concussion

Candidates have to pass Stage 2 - Assessment and Stage 3 - Interview as well as a medical exam. The dates themselves are up to the DF but I reckon they won't be wasting much time, usually Stage 2 would be finished in July.

Did everyone finish all the questions in time?

Coming out of the testing room at the end all I could hear were different pockets of people complaining about the time and how there wasn't enough of it; it was very tight i'l admit that, I didn't get all the maths one finished.

I finished the verbal and job simulation ones very early, and scraped an on-time finish in the maths.

So for the curious, what were the questions like? (Particularly the job simulation ones)

I didn't get the maths one finished either, but those tests are designed to challenge you and there is no point in whinging over it now, it's over.

The job simulation was interesting. Some were fairly obvious, for example you're not going to steal Cadet McGrath's boots because your ones are dirty.

However they were not all as clear cut as that. There was one where you only have access to one APC, the other is being fixed. The UN has stated that all movements must be done with APCs due to the rebels. You are just about to return to base which is 2 hours east. A pregnant woman in difficulty approaches with a translator. She needs to get to a hospital, located 2 hours west. Your radio is down. Do you:

*bring her back to your camp to your medics in your apc
*bring her to the hospital in your apc
*leave a medic with her, go to the hospital and get them to come and collect her
*Explain to the translator that on this occasion you cannot help due to outside factors and that you need your apc for your troops.

There was another where you catch a local youth stealing diesel from the camp. Your commanding officer has given orders stating that all offenders must be handed over to the local police force. However, you know that the local police force are known for torturing people that get in the way of the UN forces. Do you:

*Give the boy a severe dressing down and tell him if he does so again that you will hand him over
    *hand him over
*Hand him over but inform the local police that you are aware of what they do and that you will be monitoring the boy's condition
*Ignore it on this occasion but monitor the boy's behaviour over time and if he repeats, hand him over.

    Interesting.

What in God's name are you doing out and about with only one vehicle in the patrol to begin with? Faulty premise (Not that I can see how it matters be it one vehicle or two). There are also a number of variables not listed, such as the Medical ROE and the level of emphasis the UN is trying to place on host nation capability.
In the absence of other information, though, the answer seems easy.

The second one is indeed a bit more interesting (I'd first check with the CO to make sure he knows about the torture bit, an option not on the table), but otherwise the answer seems logical.

Were you allowed to explain your answers, or was it a simple 'circle your answer' deal?

    NTM

Hi manic, the first question had a two vechial patrol, however one has broken down. There was also an option in the question to get the interpreter to call the villiage chief/elder and tell them they need to arrange a ceasefire in order to get the casualty through.

The second question had a "tell the CO the information the interpreter has given you and ask for further instructions" option.

They were simple circle your answer tests - no explanation on your part could be given

    Nope, still doesn't make sense:
There was one where you only have access to one APC, the other is being fixed. [...] You are just about to return to base

If the one APC is still being fixed, I doubt you're about to return to base with just the other one and leave the first one alone. You shouldn't be going anywhere at all. Unless you have a tow bar, in which case a decision needs to be made on the policy of towing a vehicle with passengers.

    NTM

As far as I remember it wasn't exactly a patrol, more a checkpoint or OP. I don't remember anything about you being just about to return to your base.

Well done on getting the maths one finished, it's not really designed for people to finish it on time.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow with your results.

People who did the thing of crossing off all the boxes at the end, will be sorry because it'll subtract from your score. its to do with accuracy and speed so, people who didn't finish it still stand a chance of doing well. This is according to Psychometrics Ireland and similar type tests they do for the public service.

Good luck everyone on Monday, does anyone know how we'll get the results, Email?
