even if we make it to the world cup, would it not be such a shame that it is with this group of players as opposed to other times we have failed to qualify but probably with a better squad? the full backs and central midfield is just so weak! i reckon, our strikers, wingers, keeper are all of a good level, but how can you really hope to compete with that central midfield! Hopefully steven reid gets fit again soon, but even if he does, how long will he last?! i dont want to dwell on the andy reid situation, but he would be exactly the type of player we need against cyprus, great at set pieces and can unlock a defence with one killer pass!

    Stringer wouldn't mind.

    I'd say.

Brian O'Driscoll would be focking outraged like.

Seriously I think the players should be given the government jet and the managers should go on a chartered economy flight half way around the world. However in this case it was clearly some admin fu*k up. Its sound like a load of prima donna shi*t, if the rugby lads or padrig harrington was "forced" to sit in econony im sure there wouldnt be a word about it.
Same thing happened with the Welsh rugby team a few years ago and there was a sh!t storm iirc.

The thing is, talk of this being a simple admin error is beside the point. I can't believe that i'm having to point this out but - this type of fcuk up is a regular occurrence with this crowd. Anybody that doesn't see that the FAI are a disgrace must be on drugs. This is just the latest indictment of the organisations incompetence. We should all be outraged but unfortunately it's gone on so long at this stage that complete exasperation is more common :(

It's the fact that for most people the absolute abject incompetence of these arseholes only comes to light when the National Team is playing, and even at those times, there sometimes doesn't even be any actual issues.

Week after week after week, fúck up after fúck up, the people who follow the LoI are subjected to these clowns. If I made a list of all the complete FUBARs they are responsible for I'd be here all week.

It's hardly like wanting a seat down the back of the bus! It's more like "I'm a professional athlete who has to play a top level football match in 2 days. I'd appreciate it if I could be as comfortable as possible whilst cooped up on an airplane for 3+ hours so that I can be as well rested and prepared for the match."

Didn't hear a single player or reports of a single player complaining about the seats.

This bollocks is just the media who were on the same plane, the minute they saw a player sitting in economy they opened their laptops and started typing away.

'What a load of nothing' would be my response.

Also, IMO, some of the posters here falling over themsleves to blast the FAI for whatever come across as as much of a joke as that organisation itself.

You didn't hear a report becuse there would be a press embargo until the pre-match briefing

I'm pretty sure you'll be eating your words when the question is put to them.

Just heard there that Hunt is starting instead of McGeady. More of a defensive approach.

Yeh the team according to the Times (as long as St Ledger is fit):

    Given
    O'Shea --- Sledge --- Dunne --- Kilbane
    Andrews --- Whelan
    Duff
    Keane
    Hunt
    Doyle

Or whichever way they line up, but that seems to be the way the formation has taken shape.

Hunt deserves a spot imo. Let's hope he keeps up his good form.

Conservative approach with a small c imo. Dont think there is much to surprise there. Looking prob for a long strike opener, contain and then maybe snatch second.

I had to laugh hearing about the FAI/seating shambles. I bet Keano was laughing too when he heard it. Epic FAIl.

Anyway as far as the game goes I'm happy Hunt is starting. Duff or McGeady is a tough call but I think Duff's experience gives him the edge so I'm happy to see him start. Looks a solid team besides the centre of the park which does worry me.

I'm quietly optimistic about this one. I just hope we don't approach it too conservatively.

Sigh we will never acheive anything with a centre midfield pairing that weak

Aiden McGeady off the bench is an exellent option against tired Cyprus defenders.

Agree. Plus Hunt deserves his start.

I'm just wondering how much longer Duffer will have the place for.

Very little from him last season. Very little recently in an Irish shirt bar one excellent assist for Robbie a few games back.

If he doesn't contribute that much at Fulham, I'd imagine that he'll get benched.

At the moment all we have to worry about is achieving a win in Cyprus. That won't be the midfield playing in the world cup if we hopefully get there.

As for Duff, he's done well under Trap imo.

Just found out Marc Wilson of Portsmouth is Irish. I know he's far from world class, but seriously I can't see far better options at right back for him not to be in the squad.

Actually, he has been one of the better performers in a green jersey this campaign.

The workrate and free kicks he earned single handedly were an immense help in Sofia when the Bulgarians were all over us.

I think Gio has his squad set for this campaign.

I reckon when it comes around to start the next set of qualifiers we will see a re-vamped squad with the younger set of premiership players coming through.

Thats why Clinton Morrisson isnt being selected over Best and Long, he wants those 2 in the squad over the next 10 years and they will need experience.

And rightly so, being the best irish sportsman of all time.

Don't see how his accent would come into it, or do all soccer forum posters talk like "dis"?

    WRONG. That'd be Roy Keane.

I'm very nervous about tomorrow, but I think that Ireland will win. It'll be one goal job, then backs to the wall. Normally I'd never usually predict Ireland to win, but what the hey, being positive can't hurt for once.

    Ireland 1 - 0 Cyprus
    (Keane '37)

If the team posted above is accurate is pretty much what we'd expect.
Hunt deserves his place, started season well for Hull..and is better defensively for away games than McGeady.
McGeady is a great sub to have, to run at a tiring defence.

Big worry for me is Kilbane at LB :( He is and never was really a defender. Cost us big time in Sofia..and i am terrified it will happen again.
Such a pity Finnan wasn't fit..him at rb and O'Shea at lb would have been far more reliable.

I reckon 1-1. We take an early lead, then as so often end up sitting back and get caught in 2nd half.

The optimist in me says 1-0 win, but realist says 1-1.

Not imo. Harrington would be second followed by keane.

I love keane and support him in the Saipan incident but he has never been considered close to one of the best players of all time whereas O'Driscol has been.

I don't like dragging this off topic, but I think that Roy Keane would be considered one of the best Irish players of all time.

Just say tomorrow if Ireland go a goal behind (gulp) what do people think the reaction would be? I know that we responded well against Italy, but would Ireland react differently because of who the opposition are?

Without doubt one of the best irish players of all time, Drico would be considered one of the best world players of all time however..

Back on topic, with such an average squad playing away from home and the lack of business class seats.. ill go for 1-3, keane, dunne and hunt.

Can I have a spot on the plane where I can actually stretch my f***ing legs this time?!? I am the f***ing captain after all, scored tonight. Sort it, **** sake....

Robbie makes his feelings clear after notching the vital first goal.
