    Slight difference there

No difference. And while we're at it this murder you bring up, happened in the republic did it?

    Watch. They'll ban airsoft next.

Fingers crossed. The uproar on the airsoft forum would be too funny.

    There goes my martial art.

If only Noel Dempsey was in charge. He seemed to like us...
“I am struck by the progress made by the Korean Martial Arts Centre, Navan, since its foundation by Master Dorim Kim in 2006. Haidong Gumdo had only been introduced to Ireland in the year beforehand. Already the standard of excellence reached under Master Dorim Kim’s tuition has been very noteworthy and has brought success at the 2007 Haidong Gumdo European Championships. This surely reflects the dedication and determination of participants and mentors together.”

What kind of cóckhead would have a samurai sword in the first place? This bill will have zero effect on 99.9% of people.
While I personally dont have a samurai sword nor any intention of getting one. I just can't stand this nanny state attitude. They will move on and ban something else when ever they feel they need the good "we are doing something" PR and maybe then it could be something you have/do?

    Yup, happened in Dublin.

A lot of low lifes have swords in the homes because they think it's cool or something. I personally seen a few situations were one was used in a threatening manner. I absloutely hate them and I'm happy they are banned.

Of course cars are different, their primary use is transport. Of course they can be used as a weapon. What is the need for swords?

Get a club representative to speak with your local T.D. or the Garda and see what the options are.

    Yup, happened in Dublin.

Help a brother out here, my memory not's what it used to be but the only sword based murder i can think of right now was in ballymun years ago, or is this some other murder?

    From my cold dead hands.

The Atheists are not going to be happy with this. Some informal polling suggests that a huge proportion of us own samurai swords.

Some weirdo in my college showed up one day, with his Samurai sword.
Spent the whole day carrying it round and freaking people out...

    :(

Ahahaha that was me. You must have heard rumours about it rather than actually seeing me because you'd have known otherwise.

1 - It was a prop in a photography shoot.
2 - It was visible in public for all of two minutes.

    No, no!
It was someone else. I can't remember what course he did, all I know is that he tried (and failed) to set up this Horse Riding society!

He brought it in one day and was carrying it round, making threats to various people! Joke was on him though, because a Samurai sword wouldn't stand a chance against a Tallaght punch! :pac:

I would have said so if it was you ;)

Well that's one hell of a coincidence. I remember some guys throwing me dirty looks when I went to find something to wrap it in to prevent people from throwing me dirty looks. I assumed the stories had spread from there.

So this guy...did no one in authority ask him why he was carrying a lethal weapon for the day? That's pretty psycho.

They were just jealous of your good looks ;)

I KNOW. No, no one stopped him! I actually asked him myself why he thought it was appropriate to have it in the college ... I think he was just trying to show off!

    Idiot!

Well in all fairness the gov are probably just trying to nip this in the bud before it becomes too much of a problem. If they didn't ban them and a year in the future some chap gets split down the middle by an authentic one... everyone would be ah fuk sake useless shower of wan*ers didn't do anything about it until now....

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

I haven't read the whole thread only the first couple of posts, but I know a bloke who was murdered with a sword about 3 years ago, took a blow to the neck and was almost decapitated, so I am delighted to see them banned.

I have to ask: link please, absolutely no sign of alleged murder in any searches I've made.

Also, I simply cannot understand this 'hate' attitude. Why do you hate swords? It sounds mad. Maybe you should direct your hatred at the people who feel the need to act violently toward each other.

Lets face it, if you banned everything that can be used as a lethal weapon ("children, take out your safety scissors and circles of paper") people can still punch, kick and strangle each other. Do you then ban posession of hands and feet?

Ffs, maybe we should concern ourselves with allowing responsible people to live and own what they wish, as long as they don't harm anyone else. And then we can use the (perfectly adequate) laws and legislation to punish those who transgress against others.

I'm perfectly capable of deciding what's right for me, I don't need moral supervision or guidance, least of all from our politicians.

    [/rant]

the term is hoplophobia "fear of weapons", add that to the oul wanny mentality of some irish people of "dat shuddint be allowid" and you have a cocktail that will keep ahern, joe duffy and their ilk in business for a long time

This law is stupid and wrong. It is wrong because they penalising everyone for the actions of three or four people, and because the government is once again being a nanny. It is stupid because the law won't actually do anything except criminalise a load of people, including myself (I have 3 katanas and a wakizashi), for owning ornamental weapons.

And what about other swords? My katanas are cheap knockoffs that would break if you used them, but I have one sword of European design that is actually quite sharp and sturdy..this is not banned? More retarded thinking by our retarded and dispicable "justice" minister.

Why the hell can people on AH not use real examples ffs.. ITS always bloody extremes! Samurai Swords:Safety Scissors??? Don't be ridiculous they are incomparable. The sword was invented to be a sword to cut, chop, kill. the Safety Scissors on the other hand are designed to cut paper..ffs.

"Whine whine whine.. first they take our swords sure next it'll be our scissors..."???

That was a quote from the simpsons used for comedic value. If that offended you, or you didn't understand it, maybe you should petition Aherne to ban senses of humour?

Because I casn guarantee that more people have been stabbed and killed with scissors in this state in the last 20 years than swords of any shape or size. We could probably double that for screwdrivers (unmodified and modified).

And they are Katanas, not "Samurai swords".

Yes, Good job that there aren't that many swords lying about then in the last 20 years... As i said the scissors has a legitimate and legal use ffs to cut stuff like paper and whatnot... Swords man, killing simple as.. even a replica can do damage.

Making swords available to the gob****es that go about nowaday is just asking for a sh*t load of trouble.

First the govement put bar people out of work with the smoking ban.
Then they tried to put those tanning salon people out of business last week.
Now they are putting ninjas out of business!

Have this goverment no respect for the hard working, common folk of this land?

As has been pointed out, given the choice between a clatter of a hurl or some blunt piece of crap made out of glorified tin, most of use would widely take that latter.

That fact that something can do damage doesn't strike me as sufficient grounds for the 'bannit' attitude. Otherwise wood chisels and phase testers would be gone long ago. Also we'd be qing at the garda station to have our meat carved for us.

    'But what if' again....

We know for a fact that a certain number of people - to maybe with 10 or so of the final total - between 17 and 25 will die in a given year on the roads. We don't ban cars.

I agree. My smoking, sunbed-tanned ninja barman friend no longer has a job, and he cannot even whet his sword's thirst for blood now due to this Government and their crazy policies. Absolute madness.

He and his other smoking, orange coloured unemployed ninja barmen are going to march on the Dail tomorrow. I propose that all the like-minded individuals of boards should join this protest.

On a serious note, when has a ban on anything ever worked anyway? How is banning a small section of offensive weaponry going to change the behaviour of the violent and immoral people who assault and kill others? What's the f*cking point ffs?

How about some TEUTONIC martial arts?.

Last week I brought a german sword back from hols.Thought it would look nice on the wall.
When i got home took it out of scabard to take a look at it and nearly lost a finger, needed a couple of stitches.....lol blood everywhere.
Talk about sharp(german craftsmanship at it best),this thing can cut paper.I had a samurai sword in the attic that could'nt cut butter.

Lol had to put the samurai sword on the wall and the german sword in the attic, afraid my kids would get hurt with it.

Might have to change my name to Paddy Teutonic
