    Hi All

My Dad is thinking of getting one of these. His seen a nice 2005 model at a good price .

Is there any issues with this model car ? Also its appears to be a 2.0TDI. I always thought the VAG was 1.9TDI - Is there any major difference between the two engines ?

The 2.0 TDI is a more modern engine and is much quieter. Multitronic could be troublesome though, but it's a great gearbox for the diesel engine.
This box was plagued with software glitches, and from what I read about them a few years back, the mechanicals aren't fantastic either.

How about the earlier automatics , say 2002 , 03 ,04 models , Was their auto box any more reliable ?

Multitronic was available from launch of the B6 shape A4 in late 01 as far as I know. Chris would know more about this than me TBH.

Symptoms of a bad one would be similar to a slipping clutch, and the gearbox erratically hunting for gears

Maybe he should consider a DSG gearbox instead. It is excellent, it can be used in fully automatic mode too. That's the one I would go for. Not sure on what models / what type fuel these are available on though, as Colm said, you need to ask Chris :)
