I remember trying to get something like nimbuzz to work before without it working

How about telling us what those programs are? Got links?

If it's anything to do with file sharing, a server of any kind, or anything accessing the Internet over weird ports, then no, it won't work.

Cabbage definitely yes.

Nimbuzz I haven't used but. I know that the skype and msn clients do work, and as far as i recall, Gtalk when logged in to gmail works so nimbuzz should be ok.
