Is my old pc doomed. Continous loop while booting up?

Hey Guys...Hope this is the correct place to post.

I was trying to transfer some files from an old pc but when i went to boot up i get the following:

"We apologize for the iconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose 'Last Know Good Confuguraltion' to revert to the most recent setings that worked.
If a previous startup attemp was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose 'Start Windows Normally'.
1.Safe Mode
2.Safe Mode wth Networking
3.Safe Mode with Command Prompt

4.Last Know Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

5.Start Windows Normally"

No matter what selction i make it just continues to loop and i cant get to Windows or Dos.

Any ideas?

do you have your Windows CD? You will need it to perform a system repair.

if you only want to transfer files boot the pc with a linux live cd

+1 for Linux copy
Fastest way would to just use Linux though. Most people would recommend ubuntu if you're new to linux. Stick it in when you start up the pc and it'll run off the cd with all your basic operations pretty similar to windows. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu there are 3 options to get it. Download it and burn it to a cd, request a free cd (which takes some time in the post) or pay for one for a faster delivery.

Never used or dont have access to Linux.

I found the original operating back cd for Windows 98 (Yes that how the pc is)

So reloaded win98 and can now access that.

Have access tp the hard drive but no other drives now available on machine so it cant detect a usb.

I just tried to install Win XP onto the machine but it wont read the cd.

Not looking good at the moment.:mad:
