What are the rules round patching? eg. green patching on Motorway signs, im thinking of the M1 near the border, at what stage on the motorway must patching be used, the last few signs are patched, why not the ones before that?

X.

Ah - I couldn't make out the Ms. Nonetheless, there's something wrong with having the N-number on blue. One of the drawbacks of brackets for "leading-to" is that you can only really represent one level of leading-to.

If the sign is trying to say "you can reach the N21 this way, but only via motorway", then the sign should somehow indicate the M20 as the main destination and the others as subservient to it. It doesn't really do this at present, though.

They should do it a bit like this:
P1010109.JPG
...but with the N21 on a green patch within brackets within N20 brackets all on a blue background.

I can't explain it well so I've drawn a (ropey) sketch and attached it. I think that's the correct way, or at least the way they do it in the UK without commas)

Patching on the mainline of a motorway is only allowed on signs announcing the end of the motorway. The ones you refer to from the M1 all lead up to the terminal junction.

M20 start of motorway signs up on the on-slips. Greyed out for now. Strangely the signs either side are done symmetrically - so M20 -/\- on one side and -/\- M20 on the other.

Funny, not sure if I've seen it done like that before. If you can grab a snap at some stage, I'd just take a quick look. Strikes me as very odd. Though maybe it's been done before and I just haven't noticed.

There are a couple of sections of dual carriage way in Cork that remain N-designated but are 120km/h speed limits.

N22 - Ballincollig Bypass 11.2km
N25 - Carrigtwohill Bypass (from Dunkettle Intersection to older Middleton Bypass)

Same thing on the M6 south of Mullingar (N52)

Sign dates from about the time of the first bit of N6 DC but in theory its been wrong since day 1 because of the little stub of M6 there was originally!

The signs on the N4 toll are wrong too and they were put up by the people who built the first section of the M6....

Regarding the absense of chopsticks at the M4 at the Leixlip junction does that mean I can cycle to Castletown house this way.... ;)

Hi guys. Any of you ever spot a sign that gets everything right? Could we have a photo? :D

And speaking of photos, I tried to load one of a boootiful new sign on the N11 near Gorey but the upload didn't work. It said max size was 1MB thingy while my 10 MAGApixel camera wo't snap anything much less than 3MB. You folk must be using yeer telephones while driving.

you should be able to export the picture at a lower quality or smaller picture size.
you should also be able to take a smaller size pic or lower quality pic in the camera itself.

I have a 10MP camera but I have the settings adjusted so it's only taking 5MP pictures. I don't think you really need anymore than that unless you're printing a huge picture/poster!

Also, where were you trying to upload to? My pictures are usually bigger than 1MB and when I'm uploading to Photobucket it automatically reduces the size down to 1MB (you can set it to reduce it to a smaller size than this if you wish).

Not keen on lowering the quality as the pics are not taken for this site. I tried to load straight up from my PC. Don't know what photobucket is! :(

I have cropped one of my pics to lose pixels and see if that works.

Hey! it works........

10MP isint needed unless the lens is extremely good. Thats the way retail shops con people into thinking having a 10MP is better than a 5MP but it doesnt make a difference if the lens is the same.

On the other hand, these photos are cropped from much bigger pics and blown up; wouldn't be as clear with less pixels if you did that. How do you get the picture to appear on the actual post - like Zoney's etc?

88529.JPGWell, that didn't work!0569-1.JPG88529&d=1250723150[IMG][/img]IMG 0569-1.JPG

Photobucket is just a photo hosting website. You can create an account, upload photos to your account and then put the photos in a post here.

The good thing about Photobucket is that if your images are, for example, 3MB it will automatically compress them down to 1MB as you upload them. Only the photo in your Photobucket account will be compressed, the original version of the photo on your computer will still be 3MB.

Well at least they spelt the Irish version of Dublin right - Ath Cliath,
unlike Tipperary county council on the Nenagh bypass who choose to spell it Baile Atha Cliath.

So a bit of respect please!

No break in the roundabout for a start. The unlabelled stub off the roundabout map is presumably an offslip, but in that case I assume there's a corresponding one should be on the other side of the r/bout diagram? Also however much it's been criticised - afaik usual practice here is to use a red bar to show no access.

Also Sligo should really have (N4) beside it. I presume the chopsticks are valid - i.e. those two exits are slips directly onto M4?

I suppose you wouldn't know how to make them smaller! That big sign for J23 on the M11 is a bit....big :)

Another cropped one; till I master the dark arts involved here :( - was on the Gorey-Arklow section and the lines and signs on the Gorey bypass section is complete bar some stud replacement outside the hard shoulder. Nothing much happened yet on the 5 mile stretch that bypasses Rathnew and Ashford.

And finally for tonight...here is another bit of the previous picture showing the new line and studs on the Gorey bypass heading north.
Peer hard into the background here and notice the roller coaster nature of the Gorey bypass; which much have the most..eh...relaxed specification of any of the HQDC built by the NRA. They could probably use it for the mountain stage of the next Tour d'Irlande!

I really don't like it when they put they cat's eyes on the inside of the yellow line.

I think it's a good idea - at night it helps keep cars from encroaching on the painted line. During the day, if you're close enough to the line to hit the studs then you should probably be leaving a wider margin anyway.

The reason I don't like it is because when the studs are inside the yellow line and inside the white line over at the median, it effectively narrows the carriageway that you can drive on. If there's a big truck in lane 1 and I'm overtaking in lane 2 I like to keep over towards the line (without encroaching it) just to allow some extra margin for error. The studs being inside the line make it a little harder to do that.

Also, if the cat's eyes are inside the line they will take more hits and probably won't last as long as they otherwise would.

I suppose there are pros and cons to all the stud placing options though.
