From the experience with any of you guys what would you add to a normal run cycle time to help gauge this i.e if you normally complete 7mile in 60 mins would you add a min a mile ?

Thats a 7 mile run in 60 mins is it?

just seen the weather report on TV so looking like lots of rain in the west tonite and tomorrow but Sat morning is looking good, rain supposed to arrive Sat afternoon

Looks like it's shaping up to be a wet swampy course for the running sections.

quick question there on cycling transition

am going with the cleats and was planning on leaving them clicked to pedals (cover with some plastic to keep them dry) and then just slipping into them that way after the 2nd run

is there a rule whereby you cant clip in at transition area like in triathlons or are they ok abut it?;)

Final bit of prep tonight lads the following is the breakdown from the Gaelforce site. I know we've had some useful info from people that have checked out the course already, would anyone fancy adding just a short note about each section ie, 1st 5km hills, then flat etc........ thought it might be handy to bring with us so we'd know where abouts we were up to. Can't wait, surrounded here with all my gear and lists all over the place, hope I get it right!!Good luck to everyone!!:D:D

Stage 1: Beach, Trail and Road Run 12km
Stage 2: Kayaking across Killary Harbour 1.6km
Stage 3: Trail and Road Run 3.5km
    Stage 4: Cycling 32.5km
    Stage 5: Mountain Run/Hike 4.5km
    Stage 6: Cycling 12.5km

Just back from registering and dropping out my bike, it is like a mud pit out there, its brutal here in westport too, lashing rain.

Only about 100 registering so far....so tomorrow will be pretty busy out there.

This is going to be like being a kid again, spending the whole day getting covered in muck...

The main pointer on the cycle course for those who have not done it yet is that the main hill is about a mile long and really only starts about 5/6k into the cycle and can be marked with a farmhouse surrounded by trees close to a lake on the right hand side , There his a barrier about 3/4 way up the hill that leads around a left hand turn it gives the impression it is the end of the hill ....it is not...but not too much left on the hill so keep some back .There is a gradual climb before the main hill but its more rolling so you can flat out and climb all within 100m.
After the sharp decent there is a nasty but unimposing left hand bend over a hump back bridge , possible high casualty rate here so be careful . after this flat out to drummin, small hill about 250m about 1 mile after drummin . Some rolling small hills but ability to make time , main road great so opportunity to catch breath at speed, turn off at owenwee kennel sign from main road, stiff and unassuming climb for about 2 mile after the turn for mountain rescue , this could catch you so save some back.
No advice on reek as it seems to be getting bigger.
Dirt track is in bits so no help here unless you have a quad bike, bad pothole on right on downhill just after dirt track on the narrow road, downhill so if wet careful on breaks .Road to westport house flat out once of narrow road.
Any info on the run section ?
Is it worth chaging back to cleats and bike shoes ?

As CK says the reg area is cat and on the verge of a joke. The money made out of this 2500 x 85 a head and they cudnt put down maybe 100 ton of maintenance even for tracks aroudn the parking area, or the walk into tent.

The parking area is hard muck.
The reg entrance and the entrance areas is in a field and there is about 3 inches + of water.
The area where the bikes are kept is about 8 inches of muck and water.

Speaking to a GF veteran he is not impressed. He ran some of the track Tuesday and it is lethal. Add the that a few 1000 people and it will be nuts.

Just be extra vigilant out there.

I have to agree with you Yop - Registered this evening and couldn't believe the state of the place - submerged straw on the ground on the way to the registration tent !!

Registration was rediculously slow and poorly organised - and I wasl the only one registering at the time !!

A word of advice to all - get there very early to-morrw as I can see the registration process becoming an ordeal that may take hours for some people.

A tip to speed up your registration:

Get your Race Number from the wave sheets before you go out to register - there is a wall of names (all 2500 of them) from which you have to find your number - hard enough with noone around - cant imagine it with 50 - 100 people milling around a small tent.

A tip for the organisors :
Registration shouldnt involve having to go through 5 stages
You will have to queue to get your number
Then que to get your race number and map envelope
Then queue to get your tag
Then queue for the equipment check.
Then queue for the 'goodie' bag

There is no reason why the race number, tag and goodie bag cannot all be handed out at the same time resulting in more registration slots \ people being available to process people quicker.

I just hope the busses on Saturday will be better organised than the registration was this evening.

Best of luck to everyone - and do get your race number before you go out to register.

    Regards,

    Splurge

Anyone know if you have to get the Bus from Westport?.
Staying close to the Killary Adventure Centre so will be making own way to Beach

Had said it a week ago to a Gaelforce contact that I would not be availing of the Bus and they said it was Ok but reading the latest info on the website it seems as if you have to get the bus.

Also registered last night , what a mess !
Those worried about bringing one or 2 pairs of socks don't need to worry anymore ! If you don't have wet feet after the run or the kayaking, then your feet will be soaked after collecting your bike ;)
In other words they will be soaked from start to finish.
I have to agree with previous posts , the orgamization is a bit of a mess. Bring your wellies...

You don't have to go by bus, you have to tell them at registration that you are getting there under your own steam and they will tell you what time you have to be there. For example, I'm in the Green wave, and am travelling by car. I have to be there for 7.30 (busses leaving Westport at 6.30) for an 8am start. Everyone will be dropped off at the top of the road down to Glassilaun and will have to walk the 1.5k down to the beach, no cars allowed.

I registered last night at around 8.30, it was a muddy and wet mess. There was so much water where I left my bike that I saw a frog hop by me! Watch out if your surname is in anyway complicated, I came three different versions of my surname once I entered the registration tent and found my race number with difficulty.

I accept that Saturday should be messy, wet and tough, but registration!?
    Definately bring wellies.

So are you saying that the transition area where you left your bike is in a field ? Last year from the pictures it seemed to be in some sort of carpark.
Did you leave your bike on a rack and were they numbered ?
Sounds like a disaster hopefully they will get their act together today.
People driving from Dublin today - are you driving through Galway to get to Delphi - i think it will be quicker considering all the traffic that will be coming from Westport

this whole thing is turning into a farce.isn`t it amazing where greed gets you. and its one damn expensive t-shirt aint it??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 270 ✭✭iwsf

It is a filed or should i say a bog.
Agree with previous poster, expect it to be tough and wet and windy on saturday but not for the registration

When coming from Dublin , the easiest is to go through Galway and then take the N59 to Clifden , turn right at MAM cross.
Or you could take the headford road -> cong -> Carnamona -> leanane

Or if you want to avoid Galway (might not be a bad idea considering the traffic) at the athlon bypass take the exit for Tuam. In Tuam go to headford and then -> cong -> Carnamona -> leanane

In any case allow plenty of time

Do you actually get a t-shirt?! I thought you even had to buy those from the rat race store if you wanted one?

I'm really not looking forward to this anymore, just sounds like a mess.

They had better get their act together or this will be the 2010

'Gael Force: just dont do it'

    thread:mad:

I have to work a half day, drive 5 hours and register and then do the race tomorrow. I care not about the weather but if the services and facilities arnt in place there'll be hell to pay. 2500 fit angry ppl aint good...

It is bad and after the rain last nite I really pity someone going in there today to register.

The bikes are hung on scaffolding poles so make sure what you put in your bags is water tight.

    We will see what happens.

The tee-shirts are not too great are they! :)

I am posting this before I register so I am slightly unqualified but I have been in back room staff org tri's etc and on thing, the first thing, is always will the facilities work. In Ireland, the big factor is the weather therefore stress tests are always applied, what if.... so if the event is a farce please note, it will be the organisers fault, not the weather, not the solar flares or the impending zombie invasion (;)) its bad organisation.
I do not care if the mountain is storm struck and we have to battle flash floods during the event, but, in my book, once you hit a control area (ie registration area) all bets are off and the place must be suitable for its purpose.

Have a look at the ring of Kerry cycle, thousands turn up to this charity event to cycle 200km. The logistics must be a nightmare but every thing works, no ques, no hassle and all have a great time.

I hope it goes off well, I really really hope I look back on Sunday and say 'I wanna do it again' cos this is my show piece event this year, everything I have done training, other events etc are all for this. Also this weekend is the Tour of Ireland, Lance Armstrong is cycling past my front door, some of my mates are cycling part of the Kerry stage and I'm missing it all to do this. Soo I REALLY hope they have their act together... I maybe upset...

reckon it will be after 7pm before i get to reg, coming from Dublin..sounds bad..

definitely a sense of greed about this event, seems to be all about selling Ratrace stuff and flogging tickets to after party.

If they have ramped up the numbers from the previous years, they should have ramped up the service aswell to cope..cant see the sense in having 2.5k people registering in a field in the middle of nowhere, not been there but that's what it sounds like.

Why couldn't they have got a hall ( schoold closed etc ), do the admin there in a civilised place and then drop your own bike etc to delphi...not looking forward to reg this evening..but this time tomorrow should be all go so hopefully event itself will be ok

wait to see the sticker you put on your bike (with the number).
It barely stick to it so with all that rain ......
And the paper wrist band that will allow you to board the bus ....
Looking forward to the race though.
