That's two write-offs so far that the site would not have warned potential customers about. Surely the point of any check is that one should be able to rely on the information given?

A couple of things: the site is only as good as the data behind it, and it's probable that someone else (ie the insurance co, or the Dept of Transport) hasn't done the paperwork as regards write-offs.

Other thing is, the site is free. You could probably pay another site to get the same (incorrect) info.

Those are both fair points, but they don't change the fact that the check appears unreliable. For someone considering buying my old Forester, for example, that check is worse than no check at all.

I just checked my old work Caddy that was written off and it came back clean, only red flag was the tax being out since 2005

anyone fancy comparing somthing they know to be written off to the likes of a paid cartell report? or maybe everyone can chip in a few pence towards it

Strange, my car was imported last year, i just did a check on the next reg issues (eg, mine 00D2004, next 00D2005), its saying that the next reg'd car is not an import. How could it not be if the reg was only issued last year??

Two cars that I imported myself and eventually sold on are showing as having 5 owners. One is out of tax for 6 months, so it's either written off or off the road.

    Very good site!

3 owners including the garage and an import,(didnt know that) not too bad for a 93 bmw740.
however, highest insurance and tax,(kinda guessed that one)

Good little site for a quick check but wouldnt hold results as gospel.

Like a few other mine returned the number of owners to be incorrect.

As others suggested i think the main reason people would use this site is to check if a car has been scrapped before they buy it.
We already have reports above of people knowing there car was scrapped and the site says it wasnt.

So i would be interested to see what the results compare to a paid check on a car what was scrapped.

I've inputted a car that I wrote off 2 years ago (the insurnace paid out), and it's saying that it wasn't written off, and that there was one owner (I was the second).

Other than that, it seems to be accurate

Everthing checked out on my current car

but flagged my previous golf as out of tax since i traded her and sold last year ...

I think the number of owners on this (and other sites) also takes temporary transfers to dealers in to account.

I've just checked my old car and it's showing 4. This makes sense if it's first owner, garage, me then new owner. When I bought it, the VLC showed 1 previous owner.

    Excellent site - cheers OP.

I wonder what it uses to determine whether the insurance for the car will be expensive or not.....

It states that my car was never used as a taxi, when in fact it was a taxi 2 owners ago.

Great find OP! I've tried 6 or 7 cars I know the history of and all came up ok. Though it won't do the old reg...I've a ZS reg car and it won't recognise it.

my car NCT date is wrong. They say it is updated every 2 weeks. I have my car since June

Based on the responses here, it's safe to say I won't be solely using this site to investigate any cars. I'd rather pay for correct information...

Not sure if it's all that accurate. I just put my car reg in and it says it's had four owners. I'm only the second owner
I'm second owner too and it's right for me
Number of Owners (In Ireland): 2

My NCT Due Date acc to site is Feb 2010 but on my disc it's Mar 2010, maybe they calculate differently.

It's funny how they give yellow for imported cars as all cars in Ireland are imported http://www.mywheels.ie/FAQ.aspx#TrafficLight

I see there are 62373 new cars so far this year. I know thats down a lot on previous years but some still seem to have few bob or two to spend.
