What would you like to see in an mobile phone application?

    I have to develop a 4th year project for college, and I wanted to work on something revolving around Gaeilge (I've already made verbi and I'm working on a more advanced standalone version of it at the moment.)

    This time around, I'm going to develop an application specific for a mobile phone. It has to be complex enough to drag out 4th year - as it's a year long project, but not overly complex so I can actually code it!

    I'm wonder what you would like to see in such an application for a phone, and what you would find handy to use? Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Maybe I'm dreaming but how about voice recognition software- say a word in English into the phone and the phone talks back to you with the Irish word. This would be especially nice if it did phrases.. even if it's not exact if it offered phrases containing some of all of the words.

    Okay so failing that and going from Tír na Impossible to Tír na nIontas I would absolutely love to see an Irish dictionary on a mobile phone. That would be a dream come true.

    I got the Samsung as it was Irish enabled but that was few months back when I was only starting to go back to Irish again, I don't use it now as I have lots of exposure to Irish everywhere so it's be great to up the ante Irish-wise on mobile phones.

    They're just a few of my thoughts!

    Already a dictionary made a chara - Gaelfón by maithú. I have it on my Tocco. the first option, voice recognition software would be a mighty big feat - There are classes already within Java for speech - > english recognition, although I'm not sure if it would be usable on mobile apps. http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/speech/forDevelopers/jsapi-guide/Recognition.html

    I don't think the coding aspect would overly complex, at least I hope it wouldn't but I'm not sure if it would be feasible for a mobile platform. I'll do a quick feasibility report on it and I'll see if it's possible. If it is, I'll try write a quick prototype (to try and recognise maybe just one or two words) - if I can get it to work, I'll go ahead with a full project. It is ambitious, so don't expect anything - but I'll try have an answer for you by next week.

    The maithú dictionary was a big let-down for me. The number of headwords is minimal and there is no grammatical information in it.

    A mobile version of WinGléacht is what we need. Drop me a pm if you'd like some advice on getting support for it as I could point you in the right direction.

    It's possible with both Java ME and the Google Android framework. The speech recognition that is. Project proposal has to be in by next week. Will post when I've made my final decision.
